Egypt’s stability,
loyalty predicted
United Press International
DALLAS — Defense Secretary
Caspar Weinberger said the
Reagan administration is confi
dent the Egyptian government
will not turn away from its West
ern allies in the wake of Anwar
Sadat’s assassination, and warned
of the need for continued vigilance
against Soviet militarism.
“There will be no instability (in
Egypt) and the able leadership of
that country will demonstrate a
continuance of the policies and
strengths of the Sadat era, ” Wein
berger told before the Dallas
County Navy League
Wednesday.
The Pentagon chief said Sadat’s
death has added to the “terrible
equation” of instability in the
Third World and the increasing
Soviet military power that
threatens the West.
Egypt is “a country whose sta
bility and friendship is vital to the
United States,” he said.
Sadat had said he would pro
vide Egyptian based facilities to
U.S. forces in the event of a crisis
in the Middle East. However,tk Gngdo

United Press International
ALEXANDRIA, La. — The
families of the “Buckeye Three”
— three white girls who battled a
federal desegregation order to re
main at their local school — have
been forced to abandon their legal
fight by a lack of money.
The girls this spring asked the
5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
to overturn a lower court decision
declaring illegal a custody transfer
designed to keep them in Buckeye
High School. The court refused
and Wednesday was the deadline
for the families to appeal that deci
sion.
The parents of Lynda McNeal,
Ramona Carbo and Michele
Laborde said they no longer could
afford to wage a legal battle against
the decision by U.S. District
Judge Nauman Scott.
Scott said the plan to transfer

order.
Raymond Laborde, father d
Michele, said it was too expensivt
for the girls to argue their cast
before the U.S. Supreme Court
as they had hoped to do.
“We’ve got to be realistic,"
said. “I think it’s a worthy cause
and just battle, but I’ve still got to
support my kids.”
The families said their appeals
the 5th circuit court cost about
$15,000, a debt still unpaid. The)
estimated an appeal to the nations
high court would cost at least that
much.
During the summer, frienij
formed a “Buckeye Three 1
Defense Fund” and raised mono?
by holding auctions and raffles
But J. Minos Simon, attomef
for the families, said the opportun
ity for appeal seemed bleak be
cause of the expense involved. He
said the case might have been de
batable for Laborde and McNeal,
who are back at Buckeye High this
year.
The same plan that required
them to be bused out of their corn-^
munity school as junior high stijj
dents last year, allowed them to
return to Buckeye until they gra
duate from high school.
However, Carbo, an eighth
grader, is attending a private;
school in the Buckeye commun
ity. Next year she can return to
Buckeye High School as a
freshman.
