Battalion Staff
The first two weeks of the sea
son have brought the Texas A&M
University women’s softball team
14 wins, and two losses. Thus far,
the University of Texas at Arling
ton and Oklahoma State Universi
ty are the only teams to beat the
Aggies, something head coach
Bob Brock feels won’t happen
again.
After losing 2-0 to UTA in the
first game of the Texas A&M In
vitational two weeks ago, the
Aggies bounced back with a 7-0
defeat of the Mavericks in last
weekend’s UTA Invitational. OSU
had beaten the Aggies 3-0 in the
first game the tournament, but
Brock said that loss resulted from
mistakes.
Although several freshmen dot
the roster, the Aggies have found
that this year’s team doesn’t rely
only on experience and upper
classmen. Freshmen Iva Jackson,
Josie Carter, Lisa Martinez and
Gay McNutt have played vital
roles in the Aggies early-season
success.
Jackson’s .389 average leads
Texas A&M hitters, while team
mate Carter has 20 RBI to lead the
team in that category. Other top
hitters on the team are Eya Resen-
dez at .340, Linda Lancaster at
.323, Martinez at .305 and Patti
Holthaus at .298. The Aggies’
team batting average is .272.
Defensively, Texas A&M has a
fielding percentage of .963, with
first baseman Lancaster’s .987
leading the way. Martinez, who as
a pitcher has won six games
against no losses, has played first
base as well. Martinez hasn’t
made an error at either position
while recording 37 putouts and 83
assists.
The team travels this weekend
to Nacogdoches to play in the
Stephen F. Austin Invitational
tournament. The tourney will be
played on a pool basis, with nine
teams split into two groups.
The Aggies’ pool includes Sam
Houston State, Louisiana Tech,
Pan American and Nicholls State,
while the other group contains
UTA, SFA, Northeast Louisiana
and North Texas State.
The first- and second-place win
ners after pool play will play for a
spot in the tournament champion
ship, to be played Saturday even
ing at 6:30.
Soccer teams to play
Both the Texas A&M Universi
ty men’s and women’s extramural
soccer teams are in action this
weekend, with the women’s squad
playing its initial match of the 1981
season.
The Aggie women’s team
travels today to San Marcos to play
Southwest Texas State University,
while the men host the University
of Texas in an important opening
Southwest Conference Soccer
League game. The men’s home
match starts Sunday at 2 p.m at
the Texas A&M drill field. So far.
the men have won one of their first
four matches, but they’ve played
well against tough competition.
The women’s squad, which
placed fifth in the nation last year,
starts the 1981 season under new
coach Jim Butts. After this
weekend’s match, the team will
host Stephen F. Austin University
Oct. 3 in Kyle Field, and
Louisiana State University Oct. 10
at the drill field. The squad then
travels to Waco Oct. 17 to play
Baylor University.
