Piccolo and Guido “Bull” Peno-
si, 51, of Beverly Hills, Calif.,
were indicted last June by a U.S.
District Court grand jury in New
Haven on charges they conspired
to extort money from Wayne
Newton and Lola Palana and her
attorney and business manager
Mark Moreno, all of Las Vegas.
Piccolo and Penosi were be
lieved to be cousins related by
marriage.
They were indicted June 11 fol
lowing federal electronic surveill
ance of Piccolo’s home and of the
Backstage Restaurant in Bridge
port.
The indictment was returned
by a grand jury probing racketeer
ing, cocaine trafficking and illegal
gambling.
Newton, a singer who popula
rized “Danke Schoen” testified
last November before the grand
jury.
The indictment alleged Piccolo
and Penosi conspired to “obtain
money and other valuable rights
and interests” from Newton and
Miss Falana by “threats of physical
violence” and by using their pow
er in the underworld.
Piccolo’s body was to be re
moved to the chief state medical
examiner’s office in Farmington
for an autopsy, the hospital
spokeswoman said.

Pinkeye epidemic sweepg
through southern Florid
it
United Press International
MIAMI — An epidemic of a vir
al form of pinkeye new to the west
ern hemisphere is sweeping
southern Florida and a doctor says
it will soon spread.
“It’s just a matter of time before
it spreads more profusely. The
kids that come in say ‘everybody
in my school or everybody in my
project has got it,” said Dr. Wil
liam Culbertson, assistant profes
sor of opthamology at the Bascom
Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.
He said the institute has tre
ated at least 400 cases since last
Friday and private doctors have
treated many more.
People afflicted with the dis
ease experience “lid swelling and
a red eye with tearing or watering
and light sensitivity,” Culbertson
said. “If you’ve got it, you’ll defi
nitely know it. It doesn’t produce
just a little irritation — it produces
a lot.
