Piccolo, 58, was admitted to St. Vincent’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest at 2:50 p.m. and pronounced dead 25 minutes later, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police said he was shot by someone in a red van that police later chased through the streets of Bridgeport to suburban Trumbull and Stratford in southwest Con necticut before losing it. Police said they had no sus pects. Piccolo and Guido “Bull” Peno- si, 51, of Beverly Hills, Calif., were indicted last June by a U.S. District Court grand jury in New Haven on charges they conspired to extort money from Wayne Newton and Lola Palana and her attorney and business manager Mark Moreno, all of Las Vegas. Piccolo and Penosi were be lieved to be cousins related by marriage. They were indicted June 11 fol lowing federal electronic surveill ance of Piccolo’s home and of the Backstage Restaurant in Bridge port. The indictment was returned by a grand jury probing racketeer ing, cocaine trafficking and illegal gambling. Newton, a singer who popula rized “Danke Schoen” testified last November before the grand jury. The indictment alleged Piccolo and Penosi conspired to “obtain money and other valuable rights and interests” from Newton and Miss Falana by “threats of physical violence” and by using their pow er in the underworld. Piccolo’s body was to be re moved to the chief state medical examiner’s office in Farmington for an autopsy, the hospital spokeswoman said. The kids that come in say ‘everybody in my school or everybody in my project has got it,” said Dr. Wil liam Culbertson, assistant profes sor of opthamology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. He said the institute has tre ated at least 400 cases since last Friday and private doctors have treated many more.
