And Michigan, which fell to No. 12, hosts the Fighting Irish Saturday in a nationally televised game scheduled to begin at noon CDT. “Michigan has a lot of psychological factors working for them, said Notre Dame Coach Gerry Faust, who opened his college coaching career last week. “They are coming off a loss and they have lost to Notre Dame the last two years. Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler said his team will have to come off more adversity than at any other time in his career with the Wolverines. “What is worse for us than coming off a loss is that we didn’t play well,” said Schembechler. In order to defeat Notre Dame, the Wolverines must show more consistency on offense where they were outgained by Wisconsin, 439-229. Southern California, which jumped from No. 5 to No. 2 following its 43-7 triumph over Tennessee, meets Indiana, a 21-20 winner over Northwestern. The Trojans are led by tailback Marcus Allen, who ran for 210 yards against Tennessee.
