GRETNA La. — Reputed
Mafia boss Carlos Marcello has
testified h< was promised an auto
matic extension on a $1.8 million
loan a cily bank claims he should
have rejaid on Feb. 3.
The Bank of New Orleans is
suing Narcello for recovery of the
1976 ban and a civil hearing on
the natter continued Thursday in
state district court.
Narcello claims bank officials
pronised to extend the loan for
five years.
However, bank executive John
H Lewis denied Marcello s testi-
nbny, saying there were no docu-
rients in bank files promising an
extension on the loan.
Lewis said Wednesday he
made it very clear to Marcello that
unless the loan was repaid by Feb.
3 he would have to sign a docu
ment reaffirming as collateral 50
acres of West Bank land owned by
the reputed rackets boss.
Marcello testified that he did
not dispute the loan and accepted
the financial obligation, but mere
ly wanted the bank to honor their
agreement for an extension.
Lewis testified he did not parti
cipate in the 1976 loan to Marcel
lo, but said bank records showed it
was granted at 6 percent interest
when the prime rate was between
7 1 /j percent and 10 percent.
“There had to be some con
sideration but I don’t know what it
was,” Lewis said.
He said Marcello had never
done business with the bank be
fore the 1976 loan.

DALLAS — The State Fair of
tolcll;T exas and Von Roll Ltd., co-
■ 'Bendants in a suit stemming
j from the fall of a gondola ride at
■ i the 1979 fair, are blaming each
i Other for the accident.

$11.7 million as a result of injuries
she received when her “Swiss

me the case on the basis of facts,
nstead of sympathy for Cindi Hol
den. whose attorneys say the acci
dent not only crippled her but has
destroyed her marriage.
Four gondolas slammed into
one another and two of them fell to
the ground, killing one person and
injuring 17, on the last day of the
1979 fair. The State Fair contends
the failure of the ride was the
manufacturer’s fault. However
lawyers for Von Roll Ltd., the
Swiss manufacturer, said fair
workers were responsible for the
accident that sent the ride plung
ing down on the crowded midway.
Von Roll officials said fair work
ers should have shut down the
ride if weather conditions re
ndered it unsafe. They said the
wind was gusting up to 40 mph on
Oct. 21, 1979, when the accident
occurred.
Attorneys for Holden said her
medical bills were running into
several thousands of dollars. She
currently is in divorce proceed
ings from her husband, and her
attorneys said that her paralyzed
condition put an undue stress on
the marriage.
Experts from the Consumer
Products Safety Commission in
Washington, which investigated
the accident, said they were not
able to tell if the ride was unsafe
when the accident occurred or
whether it was being operated in
an unsafe manner.
Attorneys have said the trial
may take several days.
Because of the accident and
subsequent suits, the Swiss Sky-
ride was closed during the 1980
State Fair and officials say it will
not be opened for this year’s fair in
October.
