DALLAS — A computer error
may have resulted in the loss of
1978 Social Security payment cre
dits for thousands of Western Un
ion employees nationwide,
spokesmen said Wednesday.
The omissions involve as many
as 600 Western Union workers in
the Dallas area alone, and may ex
tend to other companies, accord
ing to says Martha A. McSteen,
regional administrator for the So
cial Security Administration’s
Dallas office.
McSteen said the trouble
started in 1978, the year the agen
cy started a new magnetic tape
computer system.
“That was the year we initiated
the (new) program and we had
problems across the country with
our computer system meshing
with the computers of some major
employers,” McSteen said.
Betty Bedwell, regional presi
dent of the United Telegraph
Workers, Tuesday said the prob
lem was discovered when one em
ployee asked the government to
confirm the benefits he had
accrued.
The routine check had no re
cord of his 1978 payments,
although money had been with
held from his paycheck.
The social security administra
tor said workers around the coun
try have been asked to check their
accounts. She said there was no
cause for alarm, because the prob
lem is being corrected.
“Those earnings will be posted,
if they haven’t been posted yet
manually,” she said.
