United Press International
OAKLAND — Oakland A’s
pitcher Steve McCatty doesn’t
want to talk about his chances of
winning this year’s American
League Cy Young award. Instead,
McCatty says, his goal is plain and
simple — to pitch in the World
Series.
But whether or not McCatty
likes the Cy Young speculation,
he’s going to hear more of it if he
keeps pitching the way he is.
Tuesday night, McCatty, 11-6,
allowed only three hits and notch
ed his second straight shutout and
fourth of the year in leading the
A’s to a 3-0 victory over the Texas
Rangers.
“Cy Young, who’s he?” McCat
ty said when asked of the award. “I
don’t think about the Cy Young
award, I think about winning, ab-

out winning the World Series.”
Manager Billy Martin, who
watched the game from his office
while serving out a suspension,
agrees with those who believe
McCatty has an inside on picking
up the award.
“I think his record speaks for
itself,” Martin said. “He’s got a
super chance at the Cy Young.”
The Texas Rangers won’t argue
with Martin’s opinion. McCatty
completely closed down the Ran
gers’ offense.
Overshadowed by McCatty’s
awesome pitching display was a
fine performance by veteran Texas
reliever Charlie Hough who made
a rare start. Hough, 0-1, only gave
up three hits in his seven-inning
stand but one of those was a first-
inning homer by Rickey Hen
derson.
“I just got it (the ball) too high,”
Hough said of the pitch to Hen
derson. “I was trying to throw
strikes early.”
Hough was relieved in the
eighth when the A’s added two
runs on a single by Wayne Gross,
walks to Mike Heath, a groundout
that moved the runners up, a safe
ty squeeze bunt by Rob Picciolo
and an RBI single by Henderson.
The victory put the A’s in first
place in the American League
West just percentage points ahead
of the Kansas City Royals.

excitement in the first inning
when he leaped into the stands to
scuffle with a fan he claimed was
calling him names, mostly “Killer,
Killer.”
Cedeno was ejected from the
game after the incident which
occurred after he struck out to end
the inning and was heading for his
first base position.
Cedeno became incensed at
something shouted from the
stands. He jumped over the rail
behind the visiting dugout and be
gan scuffling with the fan.
The Astros left their dugout and
several players rushed into the
stands to separate Cedeno from
the fan.
“I have my family along on the
trip,” said Cedeno. “I do not enjoy
anybody calling me anything that
I’m not. Just for the fact that some
body paid six dollars I don’t have
to be insulted up to the point
where they called my name and I
turn around and they’re gonna
point at me and curse me out. I
would not go for that.”
Houston manager Bill Virdon
refused to comment on the inci
dent.
“I didn’t see anything. I didn’t
hear anything,” he said.

enough, He has something to say to both
those who hate Him and those that love
Him and even those who may not care
to listen to Him. We think He has spoken
authentically in the Bible in simple terms,
not just a lot of meaningless religious
gobbledygook but rockbottom facts about
