Soapmaking not all washed up State
United Press International
NEW YORK — The almost for
gotten art of soapmaking is being
revived across the country,
according to a survey by the mak
ers of Lewis Red Devil Lye.
The study showed 62 percent of
purchases of the lye product were
made for the purpose of home or
cottage-industry soapmaking.
“Homemakers tell us they are
producing enough laundry soap
for 60 washloads at a cost under
$1,” said spokeswoman Linda
Dodge.
She said “some women are
making and selling interesting
looking and fragrant soaps to raise
money for church groups or local
charities.”

Hughes kin claimante
scoff at sterile claim!
United Press International
HOUSTON — An attorney for
five parties claiming close kinship
to Howard Hughes scoffed at testi
mony intended to show the five
are not relatives of the late mil
lionaire.
Ruth Dietrich, a staff genealog
ist in the Sons of the American
Revolution Headquarters in
Louisville, Ky., said Rupert
Hughes, an uncle of the famous
recluse, failed to list any children
on his 1917 application to the his
torical society.
“Most people would he proud
to list their sons and daughters on
the application,” Dietrich testi
fied during cross-examination.
In opening arguments Tuesday,
La\Vyer George Parnham said
Hughes’ uncle Rupert was left
sterile by a childhood disease.
Probate Judge Pat Gregory and
the six member jury will decide
how the paternal portion of the
estate will he divided.
Parnham’s co-counsel, Jac
queline Taylor, told reporters,
“The fact that there is an omis
sion on the application is an admis
sion that Rupert had no children.
Their clients are 80 second
cousins representing about 400
claims. For the cousins to inherit
the paternal portion of the Hughes
estate, Parnham must prove
Rupert Hughes had no children.
The estate is valued between $163
• million and $1.2 billion.
If attorneys for five parties
claiming closer kinship can prove
Rupert Hughes did father Elspeth
Hughes Lapp, then Lapp’s three
daughters, her step-sister and her
step-brother’s estate will inherit.
Lawyer Wayne Fisher, who
represents the five, made light of
Detrich’s testimony.
“He didn’t say (on the applica
tion) he didn’t have any children,”
Fisher said. "He just left it blank.
If that’s the strength of their case,
bring on more of it.”
Fisher represents Lapp’s
daughters — Barbara Lapp
Cameron, Elspeth Lapp DePould
and Agnes Lapp Roberts, her
step-sister and step-brother’s
estate.
Parnham said his team planned
to “use family statements and
documents through their witnes
ses who claim relation to I loward

Earlier, Fisher exposed

Parnham also seeks to prove
Rupert Hughes’ sterility.
