iCnepper notches seventh win

HOUSTON — Pitcher Bob
nepper figures the Houston
itros, who are currently on a
sven-game winning streak, were
little slow like he was in re-
djusting after the players’ strike
tided.
“It took me longer than I
lought it would to feel comfort-
)le and relax. I thought it would
ike a couple of games, but it took
or five,’’ Knepper said
Wednesday after tossing his fifth
tutout of the year.
The first-place Astros backed
three-hit pitching perform-
ice with 16 hits en route to an 8-0
in and a series sweep of the New
fork Mets. Astros catcher Alan
hby homered and rapped three
jngles, and centerfielder Tony
tt had a double and three
ingles.
.Knepper said he wasn’t back to

3 has skiied out Star game, because he was “still
ntains two sll hurrying toward” the plate with
weral lakes aill's fastball.
I “The curve was operating so

ARLINGTON — The Texas
Rangers finally found somebody
who could beat the Toronto Blue
Jays Wednesday night in what has
become the greatest of all rarities
— a win by an American League
West team over an Eastern Divi
sion club.
“It was definitely not a master
piece,” surmised winning pitcher
Rick Honeycutt. “But at this point
we will take anything. ”
Texas had lost three in a row —
two of them to the revenge-
minded Blue Jays — before com
ing up with a 4-1 victory Wednes
day evening. But despite the fact
that the Rangers had lost seven of
their last dozen starts, they were
still only a step out of first place in
the slump-ridden Western Divi-
“We need to win,” said Hon
eycutt, speaking for other teams
such as the Oakland A s, Kansas
City Royals, California Angels and
Chicago White Sox. “We need to
get it going in the right direction.
“We are lucky to be where we
are after the way we have played.
The other teams have done us
enough favors. We need to pick it
up ourselves.
“We’ve got to win these games
at home,” said Honeycutt, whose
teammates start battling Detroit
in a four-game series tonight. “We
are usually hard to beat at home.
These are the games we need to
win. I was psyched up tonight. We
had to get it turned around.”
The only run off Honeycutt, and
one of just six hits, came on a hom
er by Lloyd Moseby in the fourth,
his ninth of the season.
That cut the the Texas lead at
that point to 2-1. Texas had scored
an unearned run in the first on a
throwing error by shortstop Alfre
do Griffin which allowed Mickey
Rivers to reach base, a stolen base
by Rivers and a single by Al
Oliver.
In the third Billy Sample sing
led in Mario Mendoza and in the
seventh, after Luis Leal was re
lieved by Jerry Garvin, Sample
doubled in two more.
