Carpenter was among 20 high
school counselors who partici
pated in a three-day summer con
ference at Texas A&M University.
Sponsored by the Texas A&M
School Relations Office and the
Association of Former Students,
the conference gave the counse
lors a chance to tour the campus,
to sit in on student advising ses
sions and to find out about hous
ing, admission requirements and
Aggie traditions.
Sarah Langston, a counselor at
Brazoswood High School in Clute,
said high school seniors are choos
ing to go into technical areas.
“I think students are leaning to
ward technical-vocational careers
because that’s where the money
is,” she said.
Several counselors said Texas
A&M should fare well in attracting
that kind of student.
Langston recommends Texas
A&M to students who are consid
ering going into engineering. “I
think it’s one of the top schools in
the U.S. for engineering,” she
said.
The counselors expressed con
cern, however, that high school
students seem to be less con
cerned with the depth and scope
of their education.
“I’m having more difficulty
trying to persuade my seniors to
take senior English, which is op
tional,” said Eleni Vlahakos, a
counselor at Pasadena High
School. “I’ve never experienced
this before.”
Vlahakos said the students she
counsels are having more trouble
with reading and writing and
therefore want to avoid English.
Family economics is also a fac
tor in choosing a college. Carpen
ter said. “Half of our senior class
goes to community college and I
think economics is a big part of it,”
she said.
Catherine Roberts said,
“They’re afraid they don’t have
the money right now. ” Roberts is a
retired counselor at Carroll High
School in Corpus Christi. In the
past students felt they could get
the money some way if they tried.
Those who do go on to get a
college education find an added
advantage with a degree from
Texas A&M, several counselors
said.
Don Hancock, a counselor at
Midway High School in Waco,
said Texas A&M graduates in hir
ing positions tend to favor appli
cants who also have a degree from
the University. Students are con
scious of that when they select a
University, he said.
“I’ve seen it happen,” Hancock
said. “The reputation of A&M
goes along with it (the degree).”
A&M offers
facilities for
handicapped
Albert Mahood’s wheelchair
could have restricted his study of a
relatively little-known group of
phytoplankton that grows in San
Franciso Bay. But the oceanog
rapher who was able to collaborate
with him in the research was at
Texas A&M University — a cam
pus which Mahood says is one of
the most accessible he has navi
gated on four wheels.
“The University has done an
outstanding job of preparing facili
ties for the handicapped.” he said.
Mahood, who teaches biology at
San Rafael (Calif.) High School
and is a consultant in diatom and
algae ecology, said he wants to let
handicapped high school students
who are hesitant about attending
college know that Texas A&M is
designed and equipped to meet
their special needs.
Dr. Greta Fryxell, assistant
professor of oceanography, was
the researcher who drew Mahood
to Texas A&M.
“Dr. Fryxell was the only per
son who could answer my ques
tions (about the diatom genus Tha-
lassiosira),” he said.
Fryxell and Mahood identified
more than 20 different species of
the genus during his two-week
stay at Texas A&M although only
two had previously been re
ported.
An inaccessible campus would
have made the project impossible,
she said.
Excellent facilities receive only
half of the credit for the good im-
presion the campus left on Ma
hood, however.
“It’s not just the physical
aspects of this — it’s the people,”
he said. “I have yet to open a door.
It’s a very courteous campus. It’s
just outstanding.”
Both Fryxell and Mahood were
impressed with the ease of arrang
ing for his accommodations in a
campus dorm.
“I was so impressed with the
courtesies they (housing officials)
showed im preparing for Al’s
visit,” Fryxell said. “There was a
tremendous ‘can do’ attitude.
There wasn’t any of this, ‘We’ll see
and call you back.’ It was just,
‘Yes, we can to it.’”
