On-campus students looking for
a way to get involved in University
activities may find that way just
down the hall of their own dormi
tory.
The Residence Hall Associa
tion, an organization which has
been at Texas A&M University
since 1973, helps unite civilian
students living on campus but its
main concern is the activities of
the individual dorms, said RHA
Adviser Nolen Mears.
“The biggest emphasis is
placed on what the halls do,” he
said.

Hall council officers are elected
each spring to serve the following
two semesters. Other residents
are elected to represent each
floor, wing or ramp in their resi
dence hall.
Council members in each hall
collect an optional activity fee of
approximately $7.50 per semes
ter. These activity fees are used to
fund hall activities such as mixers,
formals and intramural sports.
The cost of the activity fee is deter
mined by the residents living in
each hall.
RHA members report on va
rious hall activities and offer sug
gestions for improving hall prog
ramming. RHA meetings also pro
vide a way for residents in diffe
rent halls to get together to plan
activities involving more than one
hall.
All students living in residence
halls are general members of the
association. Thus, they can attend
RHA meetings and participate in
all RHA-sponsored events.
RHA sponsors several campus
wide activities, the biggest of
which is Casino.
On Casino night, the Memorial
Student Center is transformed
into a Las Vegas lounge complete
with gambling tables and can-can
girls. Casino visitors buy tickets to
enjoy the show and “gamble” with
play money. Casino is held each
spring in conjunction with Pa
rents’ Weekend.
Another annual event spon
sored by the association is Almost
Anything Goes, a series of unusual
games and contests usually held
on the main drill field. Almost
Anything Goes is fashioned after
the television show of the same
name.
Each spring, RHA sponsors a
new presidents’ retreat for all in
coming hall presidents. The re
treat is held out of town and is
designed to acquaint the new
officers with each other and to
motivate them for activities in the
year ahead.
