Met rookie Mookie homers NY past Astros

A rookie outfielder and a veter
an pitcher were the right com
bination Tuesday night for the
suddenly hot New York Mets.
Mookie Wilson, a first-year out
fielder, opened the eighth inning
with his second homer of the sea
son to lift the Mets to a 2-1 victory
over the Houston Astros.
Mike Marshall, a one-time Cy
Young Award winner as a reliever,
won his first game in the National
League in more than four years
with two perfect innings.
“This is the biggest hit of my
career anywhere,” the switch-
hitting Wilson said of his blast into
the left field bullpen, hit from the
right side of the plate.
Marshall, 1-0, last won an NL
game on April 17, 1977, while
with the Atlanta Braves. Released
by the Minnesota Twins last June,
Marshall won his last game May
28, 1980, when he beat the Chica
go White Sox.
Houston wasted a strong pitch
ing performance by Nolan Ryan,
who allowed only three hits over
the first seven innings while strik
ing out seven.
Sambito relieved Ryan at the
start of the eighth and was greeted
by Wilson’s homer on the fifth
pitch. Sambito had not allowed a
run since May 14, a stretch of
more than 19 innings in 17 games.
Ryan allowed one unearned run
in the fifth as New York tied the
score on a walk to Dave Kingman,
one of four given up by Ryan, an
error by shortstop by Craig
Reynolds and John Stearns’ RBI
single.
