ABILENE — Millionaire oilman Jack Grimm said Tues
day that color photographs taken of the North Atlantic
ocean floor this summer “definitely show a propeller of the
Titanic.”
Grimm said he believes the propeller is still attached to
the wreckage of the White Star Liner, which struck an
iceberg and sank April 14, 1912, killing more than 1,500
people.
The pictures indicate the propeller is approximately 16
feet in diameter — the same size of the Titanic’s propellers,
he said.
T’m certain we located the Titanic. The propeller
blades are suspended well above the ocean floor and that
means to me and my associates that the propeller is still
attached to the shaft.
The blades are definitely not rusting on the ocean
bottom and it’s obvious they have to be suspended from
something.”
Grimm emphasized that his team of experts agrees with
him in his conclusion that the blades are part of the prop
eller.
“Two blades in particular are visible,” he said. “They are
sticking up (off the ocean bottom) and are quite easily
identifiable.”
The color photos, taken at a depth of more than 12,000
feet with exotic new deep-sea photo equipment, have been
studied since the second phase of Grimm’s two-year ex
pedition concluded in July.
The pictures were taken at 15-second intervals for sever
al days in the course of dragging operations over the area
where the ship went down.
Grimm charted the Texas A&M Research Vessel Gyre
this summer for his second attempt to locate the sunken
luxury liner and recover the fortune in gold and jewels
believed to be in the safe in the purser’s cabin.
Grimm said the photo studies are now encouraging him
and his associates to consider another venture next sum
mer in the hope of actually boarding the wreckage through
the use of a deep-sea submersible known as the Aluminaut.
The craft carries a crew of two and has already been
tested successfully at ocean depths of 15,000 feet.
T’m” more confident now than ever that we can accom
plish our objective now that we have located the ship,”
Grimm said.
Anti-MX petition fails
with Wyoming legislator
United Press International
CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Wyoming group opposed to land basing
of the MX missile says it could not reach an agreement with Rep.
Richard Cheney on the issue.
Wyoming Against the MX representative Louis Leichtweis said
Cheney, R-Wyo., met with about 10 group members Saturday in his
Cheyenne office and was given a petition with 600 signatures
opposed to deployment of the MX missile in Wyoming.
“Cheney strongly disagreed with the group’s position that the
MX should be abandoned on military as well as social and environ
mental grounds, saying that he would support whatever recommen
dation President Reagan decided upon,” Leichtweis said in a news
release.
Cheney did not think Wyoming would be chosen as a site for a
mobile MX system because of inadequate topography and water,
the release said.

Manslaughter
United Press International
HOUSTON — A grand jury
Monday indicted a 49-year-old
woman on an involuntary man
slaughter charge alleging she tried
to abort the fetus of a friend by
allowing her to drink paraquat.
Flora Mata, 28, died Aug. 17
after ingesting the deadly chemic
al three weeks earlier. Doctors
said the paraquat had burned her
throat, liver and bladder.
Homicide Detective U.P. Her
nandez said landlady Flor Maria
Munoz gave Mata, an unmarried
woman, the laced tea because she
didn’t want to see her get hurt
because of the pregnancy. Munoz
used the chemical to kill rats.
Bullet wound
United Press International
DENTON — Denton County
officials Monday determined the
burned body of a man, found
while firefighters were dousing a
grass fire, had a bullet wound in
the head.
The unidentified body was
found late Sunday after firemen
from Denton and Cooke counties
fought a blaze near the county
line. They believed the man was
soaked with either gasoline or
diesel fuel and set on fire.
Pathologist Dr. Lloyd White
said the man was shot in the head
at least a day before being dumped
in the field and ignited. The fire
burned about three acres of land.
