MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — Armco has reached an agreemem
principle to sell its plant at Sand Springs, Okla., and seven rtl
fabricating plants to HMK Industries of Houston, it was annottm
Wednesday.
The fabricating plants are located in Baton Rouge, La., Denis
Grand Prairie, Texas., Houston, Memphis, Tenn., Omaha, Neb,u
Sand Springs, Okla.
Harry Holiday, chief executive officer for Armco, said the props
sale results from Armco’s strategic decision to concentrate on
special-purpose steels.
“Armco is committed to improving the return on investment^
its steel operations,” Holiday said. “To that end, we are investing
new equipment and new products. But we have also had topinp®
those products which no longer fit our strategy and to divest the:
the best way possible.”
Holiday and Steven E. Karol, president of HMK Industries, saib;
sale assures a strong commitment to the products of the fabric^
shops and Sand Springs, which includes reinforcing bar and b
posts.
“HMK is dedicated to maintaining a high standard ofqualitya
service in all of its operations and this was one of the criteria usedj
selecting this steel division to become part of the HMK GroupCt:
panics,” Karol said.
“HMK views the existing skilled management, commercialorp
zation and dedicated work force at Sand Springs and the fabrie:
plants to be excellent and considers this unit to be an impofi
segment of its operations,” Karol said.
Armco will work closely with HMK during the transition to ass’
uninterrupted service to customers and to carry foward its prop:
for ensuring strong operations at Sand Springs and the other iacfe
Holiday said.
Altogether about 700 employees will be involved in the tramlejl
ownership.
“Having made the decision to concentrate our resources on spec
purpose steels, we have been looking for a company interested in!!
oducts and services provided by our minimilis and fabric
pn
shops,” Holiday said.
“Since HMK industries has embarked on a program
investment in those products and services, this purchase will ensc
strong commitment to the accomplishment of that objective,"s
Holiday.
