Over 500 players participated in what tournament director David Kent described as the most excit ing tourney yet. “It seems to be getting bigger and better every year. Everybody had a good time and there was a lot of good tennis,” Kent said. Bryan’s Tommy Connell walked away with the championship crown by taking the men’s singles title and teaming up with Trey Schutz to take the doubles title. Connell defeated Bob Hilliard 4-6,6-3,6-2 for the singles title and then he and Schutz beat Richard Barker and Charles Emley 7-6,6-2 for the doubles. Connell played for Texas A&M in 1972-73 and is now local pro. “Tommy played good, solid ten nis throughout the tournament. He’s gotten much better since he has been out of school,” Kent said. Kent is the Aggie tennis coach. Acting University president Charles Samson, who was an All- American tennis player for Notre Dame, also played in the tourney. Although he didn’t win he is consi dered an outstanding tennis player.
