LUCKENBACH — There were some dis
appointments. For instance, the Russian
Olympic team didn’t show up and one com
petition was canceled because there were too
many toilets.
Television actor, fair promoter and overall
head honcho Guich Kooch said he wasn’t sure
when the next Luckenbach Worlds Fair would
be held.
“It’s just too much trouble,” he said. “It’s
going to be awhile before we have the next
one.”
The primarily beer drinking, good funning
event drew several thousand during the
weekend, but Kooch was disappointed the
Soviets were no-shows. He had them entered
in the vodka chugging contest.
Koock said he wasn’t sure whether the Rus
sians really declined to come — they just never
answered their official invitation.
Kooch did say, however, this years fair —
spread over two weekends — seemed more
like the first one held in 1969.
“It just feels more like the first fair than any
other we’ve had,” he said, while conceding an
important difference.
“This time we have a lot more bathrooms.
We only had two at the first world’s fair. That
became one of the competitions — to see who
could hold out the longest.”
Set on a hilly 10-acre section of a Lucken
bach ranch, artists and vendors lined grassy
pathways leading to three stages where musi
cians continuously played a smorgasbord of
music from fiddling, or rock and roll to country
n
banjo.
The entertainment was interrupted foil
minutes to allow a young Texas couple,(Mg

one of many Fourth of July festivi
ties in Texas that went on as sche
duled despite the rain.
Hayes, Williams and Davis got
into their wheelchairs and started
rolling eastward on the freeway at
7 mph and the traffic jam lasted
about seven hours.
“The race seemed like a good
way to show the capabilities and
independence of handicapped
people,” said Hayes, director of
handicapped services for the Uni
versity of Texas-Arlington.
“We wanted to put emphasis on
' the able in the word disabled.”
The Independence Run was a
July 4th celebration of the United
Nation’s International Year of the
' Disabled.
The wheelchairs were flanked
by a convoy of escort vehicles
Saturday. Hayes’ wheelchair
traveled the freeway for 41 miles.
Williams was good for 20 miles
and Davis for 12.
Other holiday events didn’t go
so well.
A slow, steady drizzle dam
pened the “First Annual Red Riv
er Valley Jam just across the
Texas border at Texarkana, Arkan
sas. The rain dampened the Four-
States Fairground enough Satur
day to force postponement of the
second day of the event.
Both day’s events were held
Sunday, including a $6,500 fire
works display set up by the same
group responsible for the giant
fireworks display at President
Reagan’s inauguration. Officials
