DALLAS — Members of cults like the Rev. Sun
Moon’s Unification Church or Charles Manson’s
“family” usually are converted by a subtle and gra
dual process rather than by the sudden emotional
and physical coercion, two University of Texas at
Dallas researchers contend.
‘‘The dominant view of cults as unique and ex
treme, as deviant and strange, obscures the common
cultural elements that are shared by cults and the
dominant cultures that give rise to them,” said Lawr
ence J. Redlinger, associate professor of political
economy and sociology at UTD.
He said it would be arrogant to assume those
outside cults acquire their beliefs and goals different
ly from the way those within cults acquire theirs.
Redlinger and fellow UTD professor Philip K.
Armour studied religious cults and reviewed 26 simi
lar, studies to identify five mechanisms present in
most conversions:
—offering a new view of reality or “plausibility
structure that serves as the basis for personal in
teraction and direction;
—reducing the converts dependencies to their
childhood level and transferring them to a cult
leader;
—using role models to represent appropriate be
havior and its potential benefits;
—isolating the convert from his past in a “com
munity of the present” designed by the cult;
— interpreting events in the convert’s past to
make his new life appear superior to his old.
Relinger said many organizations — indJ
established religious and fraternal orders, larje^
porations and the military — use similartcckn,
to cement the loyalties of their members. Aliy
the end is different, most people get their few
through some form of socialization similar to W
the cults.

“The society creates conditions that make
attractive to people,” he said. “People live

HOUSTON —The National Congress for Men, a
group of several hundred divorced fathers from
dozens of states, is trying to end sexist stereotypes in
child custody cases.
“We want to take responsibility in raising our
children. We want to he involved in the care and
rearing of them after divorce, ’ spokesman Curtis E.
Posey said.
The group held its first meeting during the
weekend, discussing what it said was biases and
injustices in the divorce courts.
“It’s not a spoken bias (against fathers), hut it’s
there and it is so bad that often the man’s attorney
will try to talk him out custody of children, ” Posey
said.
Posey, an account executive with a brokerage firm
in Houston, is a divorced father and the “possessory
conservator” of a 5-year-old son.
Under Texas law, that means “I am charged with
taking care of emergencies, but other than that I
don’t have any more input than visiting
rents” in raising his son, he said.
The most prevalent bias men confront in dive
proccdings, Posey said, is an outdated stcreot;
that almost always results in mothers gettingcusls|
of children.
“It’s not that men can’t raise their children l:
fore, though, men used to go to work and vvea
used to stay home and it was easier togivecustodv
women,” he said.
“But women are in the workforce as muchasD
now, so the situation is one where both areworhi
and the kids arc* raised in child care centers,"hea
Posey said the group “is not in any kind
agreement or conflict with the women’s movcmti
“We view them and their movement as respcis
hie. They want freedom of choice as individuals
we re the same way, ” he said, adding Texas’ratfc

first congress.

The last day of tryouts for the

“It was just a matter of getting
