In ill I Phuoc Dang, speaking through Ca f:; ids 10-year-old son, Son Dang, r i „ said the American man did not say e . snk pything to him, he just “stuck a ;un at the driver (Dang). The driv- r didn’t say anything,” the inter- reter said. The Vietnamese fisherman tes tified during a federal trial be tween Vietnamese fishermen against native-born Americans and the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan offered to aid the Americans who say they are being forced out of their livelihood in Galveston Bay by the numerous immigrant fishermen. The Vietnamese fishermen filed suit against the Klan and Texas fishermen and claimed their civil rights have been violated by threats. The suit also says federal antitrust and anti-racketeering laws have been violated and asks U.S. District Judge Gabrielle McDonald to issue an injuction forbidding the intimidation. The Vietnamese also want her to send U.S. Marshals to enforce the order and to ban Klan para military training statewide. Dang said he knew who it was that threatened him, but said he did not report it to police because “he and other men don’t want to have a fight; they don’t want to argue about it,” the interpreter explained to Morris Dees, an attorney with the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center who is representing the Viet namese. When asked by Sam Adamo, lawyer for the Texas fishermen and Texas Klan Grand Dragon Louis Beam, why he had not come forth earlier with this information, Dang’s interpreter said “he and Americans want to do business again. The fishermen in the Kemah- Seabrook area have been fighting over fishing rights for two years, with the native Americans claim ing the ecology in Galveston Bay has been damaged by the Viet namese overfishing. However, because of recent state legislation which would limit the time allowed daily to fish, Adamo said the friction along the waterfront will be eased. He said he offered to settle the case out of court, but was flatly refused by Dees. In earlier testimony, Gene Fisher, a named defendant in the suit, admitted Monday he once suggested to Kemah seafood dock owner Jim Craig that the Viet namese boats at Craig’s dock could be burned. Fisher also admitted he said publicly that the Texas fishermen would “help control” Vietnamese fishermen curtail their shrimping activities in the bay after he saw a videotape of himself making the (OLD ON€TWO! ie Swiss OFF LABEll i tint MM otb««K«n ill Ckiuil ■ESE! Fisher testified he said “several times” that some of the boats “will have to be taken out of the water and destroyed.” Beam, who sits in the cour troom at the defense table and reads the Bible most of the day, led a Klan rally Saturday to raise money to finance the defense of the Klan and defendant fisher men. During the rally, Beam offered a “wreath of reconcilia tion” to the Vietnamese. Gasohol receives tax break United Press International AUSTIN — In an effort to sti mulate the gasohol industry in Texas, the House Tuesday tenta tively approved a bill allowing producers of the fuel to sell their product without the five-cent state gasoline tax until 1986. As the bill came out of commit tee, the tax exemption was tied to the price of unleaded gasoline. If the average price of unleaded went to $1.80, the exemption would be dropped. However, the bills sponsor. Rep. Dan Kubiak, D-Rockdale, ammended it on the floor to re move the $1.80 stipulation. Under the present version, gasohol producers would be granted the five-cent exemption through 1986, then the exemption would decrease a cent a year until it is removed in 1990. Kubiak said that at that point the producers “will have to fend for themselves. ” Kubiak said the tax exemptions were necessary so that producers could secure loans to build plants for the production of ethyl alcohol. Gasohol is a mixture of 10 percent alcohol and 90 percent unleaded gas. According to Kubiak, there are five different groups awaiting pas sage of'th£ bill so'they can begin plant■coliitructie)ii'.' i; He said' L fhat within four years the state could be producing 200 million gallons of alcohol. Until the Texas plants are able to produce sufficient alcohol, the state will have to import it. The bill specifies alcohol can only be imported from states that offer a reciprocal tax exemption. Gasohol currently sells for ab out seven cents more than un leaded, but Kubiak predicted some of the tax break would be passed along to consumers in low er prices. Highways rougher than shuttle ride United Press International AUSTIN — Shuttle astronaut Robert Crippen told the Texas Legislature the flight in the Col umbia was surprisingly smooth — smoother than a trip across the state’s highways. “You get a rougher ride on one of our smooth Texas highways,” Crippen said in the Monday appearance with John Young, the commander of the flight. According to Young, NASA materials will comprise one third of future payloads, with another third for defense hardware and the remainder for commercial and foreign interests. Defense capabilities will im prove from the research con ducted on future shuttle flights, the astronauts said. “In the next five years we can learn in space what it would have taken 10 to 20 years to learn on the ground,” Young said. Sen. J. E. Brown, R-Lake Jack- son, said the astronauts had “re kindled the spirit of adventure” in U.S citizens. “This country has been needing something it can be proud of,” Crippen said. “John and I had the opportunity to wave the flag on the side of the Columbia the way we haven’t for a long time.” The astronauts presented the Legislature with a Texas flag that was carried on the Columbia’s maiden voyage and earlier pre sented Gov. Bill Clements with a patch and American flag that made the flight.
