By SHEILA FRAZIER Battalion Reporter Texas A&M University has a waterski club. Texas A&M also has a waterski team that is part of the club. Waterskiing is not one of Texas A&M’s better known sports, but many members of the club are en thused and ambitious about their sport. “A lot of people don’t know the club exists,” Team Captain Edie Snow said. Club President John Roffino said the club has been around for at least ten years and has about 50 paid members. The club has recently reached one of their long-range goals — to have a club boat. The club made a promotional arrangement with the Mastercraft Boat Company to pay half-price for the use of a 1981 competition ski boat for one year. The arrangements of the dis count are that the ski team must take the boat to a certain number of intercollegiate tournaments they compete in to promote it and after one year of use the club must give it back to the Mastercraft Company. The nineteen-foot Mastercraft competition ski boat, worth $14,000, is cream and sparkle- blue colored and is powered by a 351 in-board Ford motor. “We re advertising for them,” Snow said. Roffino said the club has been striving to get an oppor tunity like this one. He said paying half price for the competi tion boat cuts the club’s rising ex penses and gives club members access to a good boat whenever they need it. The ski club was loaned the money for the boat by the father of a team member. The club hopes to raise enough money to get another boat under the same promotional conditions before they have to re turn this one next spring. To raise the money the club is planning an intramural waterski tournament, a raffle and other fund-raising activities for next year Roffino said. Roffino said the club’s objec tives are to promote waterskiing as a recreational sport and as a com petitive sport. Anyone in the club can try out for the team. Snow said as team captain she is always looking for competitors. “We know there are a lot of good skiers in the woodwork,” she said and that the team especially needs more women to compete. “We will be scouting for prospects at THE LAZYMAN S GUIDE TO SECURING A POST-GRADUA TION POSITION WHILE YOU ARE STILL IN SCHOOL. Jose and Heity Cruz hit home runs in the same game for the first time in their major league careers. Fortunately for the Houston Astros, Jose’s was a three-run shot in the first inning that helped lift the Astros to a 5-4 victory over the Cubs. Unfortunately for Chicago, Heity’s home run was a solo shot in the sixth inning. Jose conceded his brother’s home run was hit harder. “But mine was the bigger hit because there were men on base, ” said Jose, whose home run was his fifth of the season. “It’s the first time we’ve both hit them in the majors, although we’ve done it in winter ball,” Jose said. Heity said his brother smiled at him when he rounded third base in the first inning. But he added he wasn’t happy about the way things turned out for the Cubs. “I might have hit mine harder, but he got the gamewinning hit, it made the difference,” Heity said. For a time, it appeared Jose’s home run would be enough for Houston, which won its seventh ganme in its last eight outings. But the Cubs, who lost 11 of 12 to the Astros last year and dropped to 3-16 overall this year, staged a three-run ninth inning rally. And Chicago had runners on first and third with one out. However, reliever Frank LaCorte got pinch hitter Jerry Morales to strike out. Bill Buckner followed with an RBI single but Steve Hender son struck out for the fourth time. Reliever Joe Sambito, who notched his first save, got Leon Durham to end the game. “That’s been our style, winning the close games,” Sambito said. “We have the strongest bullpen in the National League.” Joaquin Andujar, 1-1, pitched the first five and one-third innings to gain the victory. He was forced to leave the game after suffering a knee strain. “Our pitching has kept us going,” said Houston manager Bill Vir- don. “It’s just been on this road trip that we’ve started to hit. Chicago manager Joey Amalfitano said Chicago starter Mike Kru- kow, 1-2, who yielded all five runs, pitched another strong game. In addition, he was optimistic about the way his team charged back in the ninth inning. “Steve Dillard (who hit a two-run double that Amalfitano had claimed was a home run) gave us a lift and we had the guys up there in the ninth who had been hitting well. We just didn’t get it done today. ’ SIhloH Announcing Our April and May Evening and Weekend Special! The Texas A&M waterski team competes against other universi ties in the South Central Region. There are usually four tourna ments every semester mainly in Texas, Lousiana and Oklahoma. Between 1975 and 1977, Roffino said, the team won first place in almost every tournament it en tered. He said that until recently there were so many skiing trophies stored away collecting dust the club decided to sell them to help pay for the boat. There are three categories in competition waterskiing; trick skiing, slalom and jumps. In the intercollegiate tournaments there are two classes of skiers. The A class makes all points for the team and the B class competes to gain experience. The next goal the club hopes to accomplish is to have its own prac tice course.
