ALVIN — Officials of the Texas Antiquities Committee say|
artifacts on display in a state museum’s exhibit of 16th century Spanisl
treasure trips are actually replicas.
The exhibit, “Treasure, People, Ships and Dreams,” is a showing
coins, silver and gold salvaged from a 1554 Spanish shipwreck offfe
coast of Texas. The exhibit was put together by the state and is ben;
shown at the San Jacinto Museum in Houston.
Friday, the Alvin Sun quoted a state archeologist who said one-tliinl
of the exhibit’s 90 artifacts were replaced with duplicates becaiist
originals are being used as evidence in a lawsuit to determine is:
rightful owners of the treasures.
The original pieces were taken out of display due to a pendingcoiit
case between the treasure hunters who found the artifacts and the stilt
which claims ownership, said J. B. Arnold III, head of the Marat
Archeological Division of the antiquities committee. It was nil
artifacts could not be taken out of western Texas, Arnold said, andtle
originals are in storage at the Balcones Research Center at the Univet
sity of Texas in Austin.
There were no signs posted anywhere on the exhibit earlier fe
week saying it contained duplicates, but “we are not trying to deceive
anyone,” said Arnold Thursday.
However, two members of the museum staff said Tuesday thatil
pieces in the show were authentic.
There is a note in a display case explaining the presence
replicas, Arnold said.
Rather than individual signs on each replica, Arnold said the noli
was put on the display “because time was pressing and it wouldhavt
been too expensive to put signs on each replica.”
The note says “at this time several artifacts are being used duriii|
court proceedings which will determine whether these artifactsbekj
to the treaure hunters who originally found them or to the Stated
Texas from which they were taken.”

OKLAHOMA CITY — Laetrile
is far safer than other government-
approved anti-cancer drugs, says a
federal judge who allowed inter
state shipment of the controversial
drug to continue.
Friday, U.S. District Judge
Luther Bohanon returned the
issue of the drug to the federal
appeals court but stayed his order
pendingareviewby the U.S. 10th
Circuit Court of Appeals in De
nver.
Bohanon refused to withdraw a
restraining order prohibiting the
Food and Drug Administration
from interfering with interstate
shipment of laetrile.
Bohanon, who has stood up for
laetrile users in the past, also de
clined to rescind his order allow
ing laetrile to be used by terminal
ly ill cancer patients.
Last year, the U.S. Supreme
Court called for a test of the effec
tiveness of laetrile and discarded
constitutional issues of the used
the drug.
The 10th Circuit Court raid
last year that laetrile was
under FDA jurisdiction and c
not claim protection of a “gi
father clause,” despite suppore
who claimed laetrile was notam
drug.
Bohanon then received
case from the 10th Circuit Court
His Friday ruling stated thattk|
drug was protected under the I
year-old grandfather clause
The government is expectedt:
appeal his order.
Motions have been tiledasfc
an appeals court to direct Bohan
to dismiss a 4-year-old suit id
against the FDA by laetrile
but Bohanon’s action Friday re
tains current laetrile policies,
Bohanon ’s action came one
after a government report was re
leased calling laetrile ineffeclin
against cancer.
