Astros lose again, 5-2
United Press International
HOUSTON — The Houston
Astros were supposed to be get
ting the kind of pitching the Los
Angeles Dodgers are and for the
Astros the situation is getting wor
risome.
“If we can push them back
eight, nine games,” Davey Lopes
said, “no matter how early it is, it’s
not going to be easy to make up.”
Houston outhit the Dodgers
11-9, but the Dodgers bunched
key hits after some of the eight
walks issued by three Astros pitch
ers to win 5-2.
Residence-Hall Association Prsents
Steve Garvey’s two-run single
and Ron Cey’s run-scoring single
in the first inning, before anyone
was out, followed three walks by
Joaquin Andujar.
Astros manager Bill Virdon,
said, “Our problem is hitting, not
pitching.”
Through 10 games, however,
the Astros’ starting staff has been
unstable with J.R. Richard still
shelved, Nolan Ryan hurt and
neither Don Sutton nor Bob
Knepper pitching well.

Zimmer, the Rangers’ manager
this year, returned to Fenway
Park only to suffer a 4-2 defeat
Monday.
Seko wins Boston Marathon
Zimmer said all the Rangers’
problems began after Allenson
was hit on the head at bat by a
pitch from Texas starter Doc
Medich, 1-1.
“It seemed that when Medich
hit Allenson everything blew
apart. It seemed that everything
started after that,” Zimmer said.
After the blow, Allenson was
sacrificed to second by shortstop
Glen Hoffman, advanced to third
on Rick Miller’s infield out and
was singled home by Jerry Remy.
To make Zimmer’s day complete,
Evans followed by mashing
Medich’s first pitch into the left-
field screen for a two-run homer.
United Press International
BOSTON (UPI) — There was
the acceptance of defeat for Bill
Rodgers well before the finish
with the unfamiliar rear view of
others battling it out for the title
he wanted so desperately.
By the time he passed his run
ning-goods store in Cleveland Cir
cle, 4 miles from the finish line,
Rodgers knew his bid for an un
precedented fourth straight Bos
ton Marathon victory was over.
Less than a minute earlier,
Toshihiko Seko had moved into
the lead in, ironically, the same
spot. The Japanese clerk then
simply outran runner-up Craig
Virgin to win Monday in an Amer
ican record time of2:09:26, a mere
second better than Rodgers’ 1979
time.
And with the defeat ended any
hope Rodgers might have of be
coming the only man to win four
straight Boston Marathons. The
race that catapulted him to inter
national stardom also dealt him an
historical double-whammy. His
record, and his string, are gone.
“I could see Seko and Virgin
battling it out and I thought they
were going to pull away,” said
Rodgers, 33, who finished in
2:10:34. “I thought then it would
be interesting to see who (Seko or
Virgin) would win.”
The 24-year-old Seko remained
back in the pack for the first two-
thirds of the race while un
heralded rabbit Gary Fanelli of
Oreland, Pa., set a blistering early
pace in the favorable, cool, run
ning conditions.
Greg Meyer, who used to woi(jJ
at Rodgers’ store, held the le^a
briefly before Seko and Virgin, the
American recordholder at 10,000
meters, took over on the Newton
hills.
Seko quickly lost Virgin, who
eventually finished 60 seconds off
the pace, and had nothing but
police motorcycles for company
the final mile. He has not lost a
marathon since that cool, drizzly
April day two years age^when Rod
gers set his then-American re
cord.
“I’m sorry I broke the record,”
Seko apologized to Rodgers
through an interpreter in the post
race news conference. “I didn’t
really have any plan. I just went at
my own pace. I knew where he
(Rodgers) was and I was just fol
lowing the crowd.”
As convincing as Seko’s record
setting victory was, it almost paled
in comparison to the mark estab-
lished by New Zealand’s Allison
Roe, who won the women’s divi
sion. The 24-year-old secretary,
who has been running marathons
only one year, smashed the Bos
ton record by nearly eight seconds
in winning in 2:26:45.
Only the incomparable Crete
Waitz of Norway has run a
women’s marathon any faster— a
2:25.42 time last October in New
York.
Patti Catalano, the prohibitive
pre-race favorite, finished Boston
second for the third straight year,
this time in 2:27:51 — nearly two
minutes better than her previous
best.
“I never had the lead at all —
not until the end,” Roe
“What I had planned was
and go with the leaders til
18 to 20 miles, but Patti got
from me at the halfway
sort of pulled her (Catalano)
about 2 miles to go.”
