Local THE BATTALION THURSDAY, APRIL 9, 1981 Page Female students at A&M RHA to see Living gaining tradition places ® an ^ P resen tation By JANE G. BRUST Battalion Staff The idea to allow outsiders into any established group is not usually popular among the group members. Such was the case in 1953 when state Sen. William T. Moore, Class of’41, submitted a prop osal to enroll female students in the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. The Senate approved that proposal with no objections, but former students adamantly criti cized the idea. Two days later the Senate recalled and killed the bill. Moore cast the only vote in favor of his bill. In 1963, the same year that the Agricultural and Mechanical College ofTexas took the name of Texas A&M University, the school did begin to accept women — but there were limitations. The female students enrolled that year were wives or daughters of faculty or students. It was not until 1971 that Texas A&M accepted all academically qualified students with no regard to sex. By 1974, 25 percent of the students enrol led were women. Total enrollment in the University for the current semester is 31,443, and 11,412 — 36 percent — are women. Dr. R.L. Skrabanek, professor of sociology, said women at Texas A&M have had a positive effect on the University. “There has been a favorable effect on the over all conduct of students,” he said. ‘Tin really im pressed with the women here as a group.” Skrabanek finished his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M in 1942, and in 1949, after serving time in the U.S. Navy and completing graduate degrees at both Northwestern University and Louisiana State University, he joined the staff at Texas A&M. “I can speak as an old Aggie, ” he said, “and my classmates didn’t want women. “I never did feel that way but they didn’t see any good could come of it. ” Skrabanek said many people felt that women came to Texas A&M for the sole purpose of cap turing a husband, and many still hold that belief. “Most come because of the University’s repu tation, because of the areas they want to study, ” he said. Skrabanek cited the fact that 15 percent of the students currently enrolled in the College of En gineering are women — 1,500 out of7,950. In the College of Veterinary Medicine, 50 percent are women — 686 out of 1,376. When women came to Texas A&M, Skrabanek said, in a class of 50 perhaps two or three were women. He said harassment of the women was common. “The non-military men obviously welcomed them more than did the ROTC students, ” he said. Skrabanek estimated that in a poll of the male students currently enrolled, 75 percent would honestly say that having women on campus is great. “I’d say only 5 percent would really be strongly against women here,” he said. He said probably 15 percent would say they like having women on campus but definitely not in the traditionally male organizations. Melanie Zentgraf, Class of ’80, has filed a sex discrimination suit against the University be cause of the exclusion of women from groups such as the Aggie Band and the Ross Volunteers. That suit is pending in a Houston federal court. ' Skrabanek said the inclusion of women in the traditionally all-male groups is inevitable and may possibly happen in his lifetime. He also projects a larger proportionate share of women at Texas A&M in the next 10 years. “Their numbers are gaining but relatively slowly,” he said. “They’re still outnumbered by such a wide margin.” Residence Halls Association members will hear “The Eyes of Texas,” a presentation on the Texas A&M Living Bank project by Mike Sicilo and Lori Howard, at their regular meeting tonight at 7 in 209 Harrington. The project is being sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega and Student Government and will operate much like an organ bank. Tim Ryan, newly elected RHA president, will discuss applica tions for 1981-82 directorships. Interviews for the positions will be held later this semester. Other items on the agenda in clude: — RHA President Sherrie Bal- car to make a presentation on the peer adviser program to be held this summer, — Brett Peabody to report on the new presidents’ retreat, — Plans to be discussed for the awards banquet on April 28, — Progress reports to be given on Almost Anything Goes, Casi no, Parents’ Day, and the NACURH (National Association of College and University Resi dence Halls) Convention to be held this summer at Texas A&M.
