United Press International
NEW ORLEANS — With an ever-present deadline hanging ovei
their heads, Louisiana’s politicians and business leaders frantically
scrambled to raise $26 million in pledges to underwrite the 1984 New
Orleans World’s Fair.
Contacted late Tuesday night, officials of the Louisiana World
Exposition expressed optimism that the goal could be met.
“We won’t know for sure until the morning,” said Peter Spurney,
executive vice president and general manager of the World’s Fair
“But things look good. We re confident we ll have it.”
The money is required by the U.S. Commerce Department to male
good any losses if the projected six-month fair does not break even. If
the pledges are not raised the project is dead for 1984.
Up until last week, World’s Fair organizers had raised $13 million
But Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldridge said that was insufficient
and requested an additional $13 million before the proposed riverfront
project could become a reality.
Sen. J. Bennett Johnston, D-La., said he had raised $1 millionin
pledges for the project, and Sen. Russell Long, D-La., pledged
$100,000 of his own money.
Johnston, in New Orleans for an energy convention of the Edison
Electric Institute, said Commerce had more than doubled the amount
needed to underwrite the fair with very short notice.
“It came as a complete surprise. There is nothing really we can do
about it at this point,” he said. “I think we can do it if this community
will pull together, if it does as it has in the past. I think it will and I think
we ll get the world’s fair.”
