Tom’s Bar-B-Que captured the Men’s Championship.
“Penny” Penberthy instructs all participants to “have a
good time.”
From the opening pitch by the “Father of
A&M Intramurals”, Walter Penberthy, through
the special events and winding up approximately
1 a. m. Thursday morning (4/2) with a rain-
delayed Men’s final, the Second Annual Penber
thy Celebration of Sports proved to be a success
ful event.
The Celebration was highlighted by a continu
ous play Softball Tournament, a Home Run Hit
ting Contest, a Fliekerball Accuracy Competi
tion, and the Redman Tobacco Spitting Contest.
The Softball Tournament saw all three win
ners emerge from the double elimination com
petition without a loss. Tom’s Bar-B-Que won
the Men’s Division with a victory over the
DWE’s. The Co-Rec crown went to the
Sportsman’s Den as they defeated Half-Fast in
the final.
In Women’s action, the Rugers topped the
Rousters to capture the title. These same two
teams faced each other in the opening game of
Women’s action. Both Sportsman’s Den and the
Ruggers started the tournament off the hard
way, with opening games at 3:10 and 4:10 Satur
day morning, respectively.
The only real damper of the tourney came one
hour before the scheduled finish on Sunday
morning as a downpour caused the Men’s final to
be called and rescheduled for Wednesday at
midnight.
In the special events, George Myrich success
fully defended his Redman Tobacco Spitting dis
tance title while also capturing the accuracy
event as well. His winning distance of 17'3" was
eight inches short of his winning mark last year.
Mike Goodenough, Richard Majewski, and
Kim Eubanks tied for first in the Home Run
Hitting Contest. Each contestant tallied three
homers out of five hits. Jenneye Shugar won the
Women’s side of the event.
The Fliekerball Accuracy Throw was won by
T. J. Harmon in the Women’s Division and
Bruce Smith in the Men’s version.
The Intramural-Recreational Sports Depart
ment would like to thank all the individuals and
teams for braving the threatening weather and
coming out and taking part in the Second Annual
Celebration. All individuals involved, winners
and losers, emerged from the tournament having
a good time. And after all, “Have a good time” is
exactly what Mr. Penberthy directed everyone
to do in his opening comments.
Then came the rains.
