United Press International COCOA, Fla. — The Houston Astros Thursday placed pitcher J.R. Richard on a 60-day disabled list as they said they would, and they pared their roster to 27 play ers with five other moves. Reserve infielder Mike Fischlin was traded to the Cleveland In dians for a player to be named la ter, and four other Astros includ ing catcher Alan Knicely were sent to minor league teams. The trade of veteran pitcher Ken Forsch to California and the reassignment of pitchers Gordie Pladson and Bert Roberge to Tus- con Thursday assured lefthander Bobby Sprowl, a rookie who has caught Manager Bill Virdon’s eye this spring, of starting the season on the 25-man roster for the first time. Also sent down as Virdon pared to two players over the limit for Thursday’s opener at Los Angeles was Joe “Shoes” Pittman, who had vied for a reserve infielder job along with Fischlin until the ac quisition by trade Wednesday of infielders Dickie Thon from Cali fornia and Kiko Garcia from Balti more. Reserve outfielder Gary Rajsich remained on the roster, but he and one other player were be lieved headed for the minors fol lowing a four-game exhibition swing the Astros are making to Arizona starting Saturday. In placing Richard on the spe cial 60-day disabled list, the team took him out of action until at least June. He is working out with the club and trying to regain his all- star form following a stroke in July. The club’s statement Thurs day announcing the move said Richard “has been making great strides toward full recovery.” Virdon said the trades solidified his ballclub for their defense of the National League West title. “I feel we re a better team than last year,” he said following two llth-hour trades which beat the inter-league trading deadline by hours. The team swapped veteran pitcher Forsch for Thon, and minor league outfielder Chris Bourjos for Garcia. “I think these trades make a great deal of difference to our team,” Virdon added. Sprowl has been in the Astros minor-league system since they acquired him from the Boston Red Sox in the June, 1979, Bob Watson trade. Writinyjfour tAesisy? Let Kinko’s Copy Service help you through.
