Page 16 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, APRIL 2, 1981 Men’s tennis Senior tennis player. Trey Schutz has begun working out with the team. Schutz had an apparent hairline fracture in a bone in his ankle. The fracture disappeared after two weeks of rest and Schutz was given the OK by his doctor to resume play. “I can’t tell you how relieved I am to have Trey back in the line-up,” said jovial Texas A&M tennis coach, David Kent. “We can certainly use him.” He indicated Schutz might have been the differ ence the Ags needed in the Texas match (which they lost 5-4) and the SMU match (another loss, 7-2.). Schutz said he was glad to be back on the team and does not feel the two weeks off have hurt his game. “It tells in my conditioning,” he said, winded after some sprint ing, “but I am happy that I haven’t lost much of my game.” The Texas A&M men’s tennis team will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Fort Worth to take on TCU and Lubbock to play Texas Tech. The Ags take on the Frogs Saturday at 1:30 before traveling to Tech Sunday. The line-up for the matches will be: Brian Joelson, Reid Freeman, Max King, Trey Schutz, Tom Judson and Ron Kowal. Doubles team will be Joelson-Freeman, Judson-Kowal and Schutz-King. Kent said he will change the line-up to try to get the best matches he possibly can. TCU is ranked 13th by the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association poll. The Frogs are tied with the University of Houston for the ranking. The Cougars beat the Ags 5-3 in a close match in Houston. (The final match will be completed at the SWC tournament in Corpus Christi April 24-26. The match was called because of dark ness.) Women’s tennis The women’s tennis team also faces some tough weekend road matches but it begins in friendlier territory. The Ags play the University of Texas-Permian Basin Friday at 1:30 p.m. before traveling to Denton to compete in the Oklahoma State Four-way Meet. The teams in the tournament are: Oklahoma State, Oklahoma University, Centenary College and A&M. Astros gain Thon with Forsch deal United Press International HOUSTON — The Houston Astros traded veteran pitcher Ken Forsch, who had asked to be traded, to the California Angels in exchange for young infielder Dickie Thon, Wednesday. “Although the Angels were re luctant to give him up, they needed pitching and we needed an infielder,” Astros’ assistant general manager Tony Siegle said from the Astros training camp in Cocoa, Fla. The deal was made less than 24 hours before the interleague trad ing deadline. Forsch had sought for five months to leave the Astros, but because his veteran status gave him the power to approve a trade, he had refused a January deal sending him to the San Francisco JGiants for outfielder Larry Herndon. Forsch said he was relieved to be leaving the Astros. “They (the Angels) satisfied me. I feel some direction now. Before, 4 was up in the air,” he said. Forsch, 34, will be returning to his native state to continue his ma jor league career, which began in J.970 with the Astros. He was raised in Sacramento and attended college at Oregon State. He owns a 78-81 lifetime Major (League record, all with Houston, and had no-hitter of the Atlanta Braves early in the 1979 season. Last year as the Astros’ fourth starter, Forsch won 12 games, the most he has ever recorded in a season. He became expendible with the Astros’ off-season acquisi tions of pitchers Don Sutton and Bob Knepper. Forsch was the only Astros players to speak out against the controversial firing of then Gener al Manager Tal Smith by Owner John McMullen last Oct. 27, saying he no longer wanted to play for the organization. Since that date, new General Manager Al Rosen has tried to accommodate ■him. Thon, 22, is a native of South Bend, Ind. and grew up in Puerto (Rico. The Angels drafted him Vhen he was 17 years old. ‘ He finished last season as the Angels regular shortstop, but with the Astros he becomes a reserve (behind Craig Reynolds at short stop and Rafael Landestoy at second base. The Astros also have Cougar QB out Texas wins 13-12 TANK MCNAMARA by Jeff Millar & Bill Hindi United Press International POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Home runs by Rangers Al Oliver, Billy Sample and Mark Wagner Wednesday powered Texas to a seven run lead, but it took a run scoring Atlanta error in the 10th inning to secure the victory, 13- 12. Charlie Hough was the winning pitcher despite entering in the seventh with a 12-5 cushion. He allowed seven runs over the final four innings. The losing pitcher was Larry McWilliams. RALPH, ARE YOU SAYiNG 1'00'RE P19APP0IMT&P GRACE. I CON'TSertHE VALUE SYSTEM. 1 JUST WANT MY V-W TO BE HAPPY, OKAY...? Oliver led the Rangers’ 20-hit attack by lashing out four hits, in cluding the 10th inning single that Brave Brian Asselstine overran, allowing Mario Mendoza to score from first base. Tommy Harper had four sing les and scored three runs for the Braves. The Rangers also reported cut ting six players, bringing their spring training roster to 28. The regular season begins April 9. utility infielder Dave Roberts. “He’s a middle infielder,” Siegle said. “He’s a fine quality player who will bolster our infield staff. As he plays, we will see whether he can establish himself as a regular. Right now we got him to bolster the middle infield, not to knock anyone out of a job.” Thon, 22, opened the 1980 sea son with Salt Lake City in the Pacific Coast League and was leading the league with a . 394 bat ting average when recalled by the Angels May 27. In 80 Major League games last year, the right- handed hitter batted .255. In 35 games in 1979, he hit .339. During the final 24 games when he was the regular shortstop, Thon hit. 280. Last winter he play ed for the Bayamon, Puerto Rico, team coached by Astros third baseman Art Howe. Rosen, who had bickered with Forsch the past few months and called him “not even a . 500 pitch er,” Wednesday referred to him as a “quality pitcher.” Rosen explained the difference by saying Forsch’s lifetime record was below . 500 because he played for several poor Astros teams. “I think Kenny will win more games for California than he ever did for the Astros,” he said. United Press International HOUSTON — Houston coach Bill Yeoman said Wednesday starting quarterback Brent Chinn had been admitted to a hospital for neurological tests and would be lost to the football team for the remainder of its spring drills. Chinn, a sophomore, was in volved in a head-on tackle during a scrimmage last Saturday. He watched the remainder of the workout from the sidelines and has not taken part in any work since then. Chinn appeared in 11 games with the Cougars last season. He led the offense throughout most of the campaign, replacing senior Terry Elston who went out after the third game of the season with a fractured wrist. C£§£D IS COMING !
