For the election of off-campus
senators, the Bryan-College Sta
tion area is divided into four
wards, bounded by Texas Avenue
and University Drive. Each stu
dent is eligible to vote only for
senators from his ward.
The intersection provides a
natural boundary,” Paul Betten
court, chairman of the Student
Government Judicial Board, said.
“Each of those areas has their own
problems and needs.”
Ward I is the area up Highway
30 and contains several of the area
trailer parks and apartment com
plexes such as Sundance and TVa-
vis House.
Ward II contains apartment
complexes such as Sevilla, Arbor
Square and Taos.
Ward III contains the residen
tial homes of Bryan.
Ward IV contains the older
apartment complexes and du
plexes of the Northgate area.
Maps will be available at the
polling places to help students de
termine their ward. No formal re
gistration is required. “We don’t
have any registers or rolls,” Bet
tencourt said. “We rely on the
Aggie Code (of Honor).”
Redistribution of senators
occurs every year, Bettencourt
said. “We redistribute the num
ber of senators from each ward ev
ery year according to the number
of voters from each ward the year
before. ”
This year, six senators will be
elected from Ward I, nine from
Ward II, two from Ward III and
four from Ward IV.
Off-campus students are dras
tically outvoted by residence hall
and Corps of Cadets voters every
year, Bettencourt said. “One out
of nine off-campus students vote,”
he said, “while one out of two
Corps members and three out of
seven residence hall dwellers
vote.
“There has never been a
tremendous effort to arouse the
enthusiasm of off-campus students
because it is so difficult. It’s diffi
cult because off-campus people
are so disperse.”
Efforts will be made next year,
however, to get out the off-
campus vote through apartment
representatives and other mea
sures.
