Johnson, who is the present Speaker of the Senate, says one of his goals is to establish a uniform, Universitv-wide Q-drop policy that allows a student time to establish a grade prior to the Q- MARC SCHNEIDER Marc Schneider, a junior political science major from Humble, says his main goal as student body president is to provide the enthu siastic leadership that is required to ensure students get “a fair deal in any of the administration’s poli cies.” Schneider says he also feels it is important to enhance tradition and students services in order to keep pace with the rapid growth at Texas A&M. To keep tradition at Texas drop deadline. Johnson says he will also work for the continuation of finals exemption for seniors. A third problem Johnson says he will attempt to solve concerns the teaching effectiveness of the faculty. “Effective teaching must not be sacrificed for the sake of research,” he says. Johnson says pedestrian and bi cycle traffic should take prece dence over vehicles on campus and adequate parking lots should be maintained. Action should be taken, with A&M strong, Schneider would hold a rally for freshmen that don’t attend Fish Camp and continue support for the Fish Camp prog ram, he says. He would also help Off-Campus Aggies get more stu dents involved and offer a special program on traditions. Schneider says he would en courage RHA to promote trad- tions through dorm councils and have special orientation for inter national and out-of-state students as well as new professors. En couraging better relations be- safeguards from a computing faci lities study, to better train stu dents and allow them more com puter time, he says. Johnson says, “We must look for the most equitable way to re duce overcrowding and long waits in the A.P. Beutal Health Cen ter.” With respect to long-term plan ning for the University, Johnson says there is a need to limit stu dent enrollment since the Univer sity is out-growing its physical plant. tween the Corps of Cadets and the rest of the student body is also important, he says. “Texas A&M is an incredibly student-oriented University con sidering its size,” Schneider says. “It will take increased efforts to maintain this characteristic as the school expands.” Expanding student services and making them better known to stu dents would be one of his major concerns. “I would push for more dorm- related services,” Schneider says, Johnson says there is a need for better contact between senators and their constituents. “We should make constituent contact a factor in the existing point system used to monitor senators’ effec tiveness,” he says. Johnson says one of the primary weaknesses in the Student Gov ernment is that too many senators drop out. “We need strong com petition for all senate positions,” Johnson says. This measure should bring greater awareness of Student Government. “since the fees will be increased by 20 percent.” He would assure student approval of housing policies by forming a committee to monitor administrative activity and keep ing students informed, he says. Schneider is a second-year senator and has served on the External Affairs Committee, Stu dent Services Committee and Ac ademic Affairs Committee, as well as RHA. DAVID B. COLLINS David B. Collins, a junior pofitical science major from Lubbock, says his main goal would be to improve the services offered to students and to effectively present student ideas to university officials. Collins, who is the current vice president of external affairs, says communication between students and the senate is the major weak ness of the Student Government He plans to solve this problem by encouraging more contact be tween senators and students and increasing direct contact between organizational leaders. Dealing with Texas A&M’s en rollment increase will be a major problem next year, Collins says. “Taking steps to ensure that our Aggie spirit is not lost as we con tinue to change and develop,” he says would be one of his major concerns. First and foremost, a student body president must understand the ideas that make an “Aggie,” Coffins says. Collins says he would work to preserve the cohesiveness of the student body. Improving student services offered would be another goal, Collins says, along with, “maldng sure the student voice is heard at all levels of the University system.” Coffins says one potential prob lem area he sees that he would concentrate on is the preservation of Texas A&M’s “excellent educa tional environment.” To do this, Collins said he would work to en sure that teaching is not oversha dowed by research, improve the operations of the Student Finan cial Aid Office and increase the level and quality of counseling in each academic department. Collins says his qualifications are one year as vice president of external affairs, one year as a stu dent senator, one year as the dire ctor of business and consumer re lations and one year as a represen tative of the Off-Campus Student Association. MATT WOODRUFF Matt Woodruff, acting president of Alpha Phi Omega, says he is running for student body presi dent to serve and represent the students. Woodruff, a junior psychology major from Houston, says his qualifications are dedication, ex perience, a serious attitude and a commitment to be informed on all matters. “While acting as presi dent of APO, chairman of the Aggie Blood Drive and serving in other positions, I have developed sound working relationships with administrators and student lead ers,” Woodruff says. “As presi dent (of Student Government), I will build on these relationships.” Woodruff says his main goal is to organize and motivate the Student Government to accomplish a vari ety of specific goals. “In organiz ing I will establish a functional heirarchy that will assign respon sibilities clearly, so that each offic er understands what his job en tails,” he says. He says the Student Govern ment has a duty to promote a posi tive image of Texas A&M Univer sity in order to recruit new stu dents and to aid graduates in get ting jobs. The current Student Govern ment has failed in this duty, he says. However, Woodruff says the Student Government is a present ly a sound organization. “I wish to build on this foundation so that even greater goals may be real ized,” he says. Woodruff says there are some problems currently facing the University. One is rapidly increas ing tuition and fees. “I will show the untoward effects of these in creases to those attempting to in stitute them,” he says. He says another problem is on- campus parking. Woodruff says he will work to improve the bus system. Attacks on the Permanent Uni versity Fund is another problem he says. “I will actively lobby against any challenges to it,” Woodruff says. Photo not available MARY ELIZABETH HERRING Mary Elizabeth Herring, current Student Government liaison to the College Station City Council, is running for student body presi dent. Herring, a political science junior from Fort Worth, says she is running for president “because I feel like I have some experience and some quahties to lend to the office.” “I was motivated by dissatisfac tion with the status quo, ” she says. Herring says she feels there is “a tendency for Student Govern ment to be preoccupied with the issues that are beyond its scope. These ‘nonproblems’ consume time and resources that could be devoted to more important pro jects.” She has been the city govern ment liasion since Fall 1979, and was an off-campus senator in ’79- ’80. Through working at the Univer sity Art Exhibit for 3% years, Her ring says, she has come into con tact with many University admi nistrators and officials. Herring’s main goal if elected would be to maximize representa tion from all segments of the Uni versity, to utilize this input in de cision-making and in dispensing information. The major weakness in the Stu dent Government is that there is room for improvement in the rep resentativeness of the student body in Student Government. Herring sees her goal as student body president as researching stu dent opinion and representing it in the fairest way possible. Key problems Herring sees fac ing the University are “problems with academic requirements — one sometimes questions if stu dents are getting a ‘University education.’ Through improving advisor-student relations, a stu dent’s goal can be better defined and met.” \ , i 9 W* * i - • * * * Voter’s Guide — Page 3
