Mackovic compiled a 14-20 record in his three seasons at Wake Forest and his 1979 team, basically the same that had gone 1-10 the year before, went 8-4 and to the Tangerine Bowl. The Deacons were 5-6 last season. After the 1979 season Mackovic, 37, was named coach of the year by The Sporting News, the Walter Camp Football Foundation, and the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1979. Mackovic will fill the Cowboys job that opened when Dan Reeves left to become head coach of the Denver Broncos. Cowboy coach Tom Landry also announced Mike Ditka, who coached tight ends and special terns for the Cowboys last year, also will coach wide receivers in 1981. “I didnt think we would be able to add a coach at this late date, ” Landry said. “But we’re very fortunate to be able to obtain a man of the caliber of John Mackovic. We feel he’ll be a great assset because of his extensive background in working with quarterbacks and with offenses in general. He did a great job of turning around the program at Wake Forest. He’s always coached quarterbacks and he’s always been a great believer in a strong passing game. ” In the past two seasons, his teams broke virtually every club offensive record, both team and individual, as well as a number of Atlantic Coast offensive marks. Mackovic, a 1965 graduate of Wake Forest and quarterback for the Deacons in 1964, served as an assistant at Miami of Ohio, the U.S. Military Academy, San Jose State, Arizona and Purdue before be coming the Deacons’ head coach. 9 STRING??
