Texas A&M University has
been chosen by the National Asso
ciation of College and University
Residence Halls (NACURH) to
host the 1981 Residence Halls
Association Convention May 21-
24. The program proposed by
Texas A&M is “Burning Desire:
Fire Up Your Residence Halls.”
The theme of “burning desire”
is used to draw a comparison be
tween the building of bonfire and
the building of a better residence
hall. In each instance, people be
gin with a rough and disorganized
idea of what they’re doing, said
James Skees, audio visual equip
ment subchairman.
“It’s a lot of people working to
bring ideas and materials together
until those ideas start to take shape
and finally are molded into a
polished structure, he said.
Through cooperation and hard
work, people reach a common
goal, Skees said.
NACURH is a student organi
zation with more than 100 mem
ber schools nationwide. Formed
as a subcommittee of RHA at the
university where a convention is
to be held, NACURH coordinates
all activities, programs and enter
tainment. A university is chosen
to host a convention on the basis of
the originality of its bid, the design
of the program and what the prog
ram has to offer.
Also taken into consideration is
the cost per delegate, how often a
region has hosted a convention
and the possibility of other schools
in the region getting involved in
NACURH.
Rick Mora, chairman of
NACURH, said the convention is
aimed at building residence hall
associations across the country.
Through the convention, he said,
ideas and programs are exchanged
among the schools.
“It’s interesting to note that
Casino came out of a conference
like that,” Mora said. “We picked
up the idea from another school.
Now it’s very profitable for RHA.
It’s a great money maker. ” Casino
is an annual Las Vegas-type event
sponsored by RHA.
Mora also said the conventions
promote involvement by RHA
people. He added that after the
last Texas RHA convention, there
was a huge increase in member
ship.
Texas A&M was selected on the
basis of its program bid, Mora
said. While other schools hold
workshops and seminars, he said,
they plan to split the delegates
into hall councils and charge them
with the task of coming up with the
perfect semester’s programming
— “that all-elusive perfect.”
They will then be judged, Mora
said, and as an incentive, awards
will be given to some of the better
ones.
“We anticipate having about 50
different hall councils,” Mora
said. The program is different than
anything that has ever been done,
he said.
Mark Christian, publicity sub
chairman, said about 1,500 dele
gates are expected. Last year
there were between 1,000 to
1,200 delegates. Christian said
more were expected due to the
central location of Texas A&M
compared to the 1980 convention
in North Carolina.
Christian said they saw what
people liked and what they dis
liked last year, and they want to
change the unfavorable things.
“We want them to have the best
convention they’ve ever had,” he
said. “We want to show off Texas
A&M. We’ve got a lot of pride.”
