TV news subpoenaed in Daniel trial
United Press International
LIBERTY — Attorneys representing Vickie Daniel,
charged with the January slaying of her husband, sub
poenaed a Houston television station Tuesday asking for
transcripts of news shows from Sunday and Monday nights.
Channel 13 KTRK-TV news director Walt Hawver said
he will comply with the subpoena and supply only the
information that went on the air.
“We give them what was broadcasted and nothing
more, ” Hawver said. Reporters are free to testify what they
may have heard in court, but no staff member will divulge
information told to them by sources, Hawver said.
Daniel’s attorneys are concerned that information about
the pending child custody and criminal trial is being leaked
to the media, sources said.
Reporter Diana Fallis’ subpoena states she must be in
court Thursday, but Hawver said Fallis is not the reporter
covering the Daniel case. He said he would probably send
an attorney to court instead.
Daniel is charged with the Jan. 19 shooting death of her
husband, former Texas House Speaker Price Daniel Jr.
Her lawyer, Richard “Racehorse” Haynes, said the shoot
ing was done in self-defense and his client was a battered
wife.
Haynes has alluded during court hearings to possible
drug use and homosexual activities by Price Daniel Jr.
Mrs. Daniel is expected to return to the Liberty County
courthouse Wednesday for her third session with her
lawyers and the attorneys representing her sister-in-law
Jean Daniel Murph.
The two women are engaged in a court battle over
custody of Daniel’s two small boys. Murph said Daniel is an
unfit mother and the children are in jeopardy if they stay
with their mother.
Daniel has already answered questions posed by attor
neys for 13 hours during Friday and Monday’s deposition
sessions. Her two other children from a previous marriage
also have been scheduled for depositions today.
The custody hearing, which begins Thursday with the
selection of a 12-person jury, may last several weeks.
However, some of the attorneys dispute it will go on for
more than a week.
After the custody trial, Daniel will still face the criminal
charges of murder. During a routine court session last
Wednesday, one of the attorneys, Harlan Friend, refused
to waive Daniel’s right to a speedy trial. Therefore, the
criminal case must go to trial within 120 days of Daniel’s
arrest on Jan. 24, according to Texas law.

Clayton proposes using
money for water bonds
United Press International
AUSTIN — Speaker Bill Clayton told a House
committee studying his proposal for a Water
Trust Fund that water development in the state
will become more crucial during the next 50 years
because of the expected dramatic increase in
population.
Clayton told the House Constitutional Amend
ments Committee that water from existing sup
plies will be insufficient to meet demand by 1990.
The speaker’s proposed constitutional amend
ment would dedicate funds left in the state treas
ury at the end of each biennium to special funds to
guarantee bonds for water projects and to pay off
state bond debts.
“We’ll have to look for outside sources for
water very shortly," Clayton said.
Clayton’s proposal would not use state funds to
pay off bonds for water projects, but would use
the fund to back bonds issued by local govern
ments, thereby enabling the local governmental
units to attain a better bond rating.
’ The speaker said that Texas’ population will
increase to 35 million by the year 2030, about a
175 percent increase from the current popula
tion.
“We’ve got to take care of our water needs or
we ll end up with a water crisis that would be
worse than any energy crisis,” he said.
Ed Coltharp of Abilene, executive vice presi
dent of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce,
said Clayton’s proposed Water Trust Fund would
not only benefit West Texas and the Panhandle,
but also the remainder of the state.
“This bill is not a West Texas bill,” he said. “It’s
a statewide bill.”
Coltharp, who indicated his association repre
sented 132 counties that comprise about 60 per
cent of the state, said that since the organization
was formed 63 years ago, the West Texas Cham
ber of Commerce had supported a long-range
water resource plan to meet future shortages.
“This is something that is long overdue,” he
said.
Duncan Ellison of Lubbock, executive director
of Water Inc. of Lubbock, said most of the water
development programs in the state were mostly
financed with federal money.
“And that money is drying up,” he said in
reference to President Reagan’s plan to cut feder
al spending and force the states to finance more of
their projects.
Ellison said his organization has worked for
more than a decade on a plan to import water to
arid West Texas from other states and he said
Clayton’s proposal could help achieve that goal.
“This (the Water Trust Fund) is a vehicle that
will encourage and accelerate development of wa
ter in the state,” Ellison said.
Many indicted in oil fraud

BORN OF GOD
An illustration:
By our natural birth, we were not born of God.
Rather, we were born of man. This is why the Bi
ble calls mankind “the sons of men.” But there
is another birth available to men, and this is the
spiritual birth, through which all the sons of
men may become sons of God.
How To Receive The
Spiritual Birth
The way to receive the spiritual birth is to
believe in Jesus Christ and thus receive Jesus
Christ. Receiving Jesus Christ into your life is
equivalent to receiving this new birth. And our
receiving comes through believing. You can
receive Him by opening your heart and calling
upon His name, “Lord Jesus, come unto me.”
"But as many as received him (Jesus Christ), to
them gave He power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on His name.”
John 1:12.
What Happens When I
Believe In Christ?
The Bible says that “whosoever believes
that Jesus is the Christ is born of God" (1
John 5:1). By believing in Jesus, you receive
Jesus and the forgiveness of your sins
through His cleansing blood. By receiving
Jesus, you are born of God. To be born of
God is to receive God’s eternal life, which is
in Jesus Christ.
Born Of The Spirit
To be born of God is also to be born of the
Spirit. God is Spirit (John 4:24); and we, the
human beings, have a human spirit (Job 32:8).
In the Bible, there is the Divine Spirit (written
with a capital letter “S”) and the human spirit
(written with a small letter “s”). The spiritual
birth occurs in us when the Divine Spirit
enters into our human spirit, thus
regenerating our human spirit with the divine
life. “That which is born of the Spirit (Divine)
is spirit (human).” John 3:6.

MAN:
GOD:
In Christ,
as Spirit,
•ntsrs
into our
spirit
As seen in the above illustration, man is
composed of three parts: body, soul, and
spirit (see 1 Thess. 5:23). We use our body to
live in the physical world, and our soul
(“psuche”) to engage in the psychological
world. But our spirit is in us to contact the
spiritual Kingdom of God. Since the time of
our natural birth, our body and soul have
been very much alive. But our spirit has not
been alive. In fact, our spirit was dead
towards God. This is why we need our spirits
to be enlivened and regenerated. When our
spirit comes alive, we are alive towards God,
and God is living to us.
How Can I Be Sure That I Am
Born of God?
First, the Bible says so, and God’s word is
to be trusted. Second, the Spirit Himself will
bear witness with your spirit that you are a
child of God (Rom. 8:16). Thus, you have the
affirmation of the Bible and confirmation of
the Spirit within. Read and re-read the Bible
verses that are quoted in this article. And,
also, realize that a new life is within you, giv
ing you new desires, for spiritual things.
Spontaneously, you will begin to love the Bi
ble, to desire to fellowship with other Chris
tians, and to follow after Christ. These are
the signs that tell you that you are born of
God.

CARP: MASTERS AT DECEPTION
They appear as harmless, lov
ing, giving, and concerned indi
viduals. They talk about God,
Jesus Christ, love, unity, and per
fection. They open their homes to
you and invite you on weekend
retreats. They make you feel
warm, wanted, and valuable.
But don’t get sucked in too
quickly. Behind the plastic smiles
and fresh flowers lies a mountain
of deception. Like the fish that
bears the same name, they are
scavengers — picking up
phraseology used by other reli
gious groups, especially Chris
tians, in order to hide their true
identity. Terms such as God, sal
vation, and Jesus Christ are only
words which carry definitions
much different than the hearer
realizes.
The deception begins with the
name of the parent organization
behind CARP — “The Holy
Spirit Association for the Unifica
tion of World Christianity” —
better known as the Unification
Church oe the “Moonies”. There
is only one problem: there is
nothing “Christian” about either
the church or the organization.
On the contrary, one of their ma
jor goals is the destruction of pre
sent day Christianity. According
to Rev. Moon, the oriental mas
termind behind the scheme,
“God is now throwing Christiani
ty away and is establishing a new
religion, and the new religion is
the Unification Church ”. (Time,
Sept. 30, 1974) No Christian or
ganization on this campus or
church in this city sanctions in
any way the teachings of Moon.
The title “Christian” is only a cov
er-up to confuse unsuspecting in
dividuals.
CARP itself claims to have no
direct affiliation with the Unifica
tion Church. According to them
(as printed in the Battalion last ,
week), members of CARP are not
required to be members of the
church. This is another decep
tion. Although there is no “re
quirement”, CARP would be
meaningless without Moon’s web
of theology. He established
CARP as a means of promoting
his homespun religion among stu
dents, and his teachings form the
basis of the group’s operations
and goals. The Divine Principle,
Moon’s pot-luck “Bible”, is the
group’s text and basis for all
teaching. One may not be a part
of the church when they join
CARP, but they would certainly
have no reason to continue unless
they conformed to the church’s
doctrine.
Let’s look a little further at this
cleverly devised scheme.
Note: CARP (Collegiate Associa
tion for the Research of Princi
ples) is a student organization
currently seeking recognition at
Texas AirM.
DECEPTION: “Nothing in the
Divine Principle contradicts the
Bible. . . it is simply a deeper
explanation of it. ”
TRUTH: This is not simply a de
ception, but an outright lie. Al
most everything that CARP
teahes is dyametrically opposed
to what the Bible clearly states
and Christians believe. It is not
an explanation, but a fabrication
of a whole way of thinking clever
ly sprinkled with enough Bible
verses to make it appear “Chris
tian”. It is all part of the decep
tion. The Bible is not taken liter
ally, and means only what Moon
has determined it to mean. (Did
you know that the “original sin”
was Eve having sex with Satan?!
Try finding that one in the Bible.)
DECEPTION? “We believe in
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and
that He died on the cross for our
sin.” Although this sounds pretty
straight forward and fundamen
tal, it is not. According to them,
Jesus was only a perfect man who
never came to die. His mission
was to marry a perfect wive, have
perfect children, and develope a
perfect society and world. He ut
terly failed in His mission be
cause the people refused to rec
ognize and accept Him. His death
was one of the greatest errors of
history. The only “sin” His death
paid for was the sin of refusing to
recognize Him.
TRUTH: Jesus Christ claimed to
be God in the flesh. He states
numerous times that His mission
was to die for the sin of mankind
— the continual violation of God’s
eternal principles. He accom
plished His mission at the cross.
This truth is found from cover to
cover in the Bible.
DECEPTION: “Jesus Christ rose
from the dead.” What they mean
by this is that only His spirit rose;
His body was given to Satan as a
ransom for the people’s rejection
of Him.
Jesus bodily resurrected from
the dead and appeared physically
to hundreds of people over a
period of forty days. He constant
ly foretold His bodily resurrec
tion to His followers, and proved
His diety by conquering death.
The bodily resurrection stands as
one of the most historically docu
mented happenings in history.
All bom again Christians adhere
to this without a doubt.
DECEPTION: “The Messiah will
come a second time.” However,
when they say this, they don’t
mean Jesus Christ, but only
someone with the spirit of Christ.
The particular body will be that of
a Korean, bom in 1920. (Conve
niently, Rev. Moon fulfills both of
these.)
TRUTH: Christians are looking
for and expecting the bodily re
turn of Jesus Christ. There is no
mention in the Bible of a little
Korean taking the place of Jesus
Christ’s literal return. This is sim
ply another cleverly devised tale
developed by an egocentric, de
monically-motivated individual
who wants to set the world under
his feet. (Moon’s personal assets
in Korea alone exceed $30 mil
lion. He ‘sacrifically” lives in a 25-
room mansion in New York while
his devoted followers contribute
all their earnings to the “cause”.)
DECEPTION: By following the
teachings of Moon, man can
eventually grow to perfection.
have perfect families, and usher
in the Kingdom of God (under
Moon, of course) on earth.
TRUTH: The Bible clearly
teaches exactly the opposite.
Many throughout history have at
tempted to achieve perfection
and develop a utopian society.
However, the Bible clearly states
that man’s basic problem is not
external (governments, society,
etc.) — but internal. “For from
within, out of the heart of men,
proceed the evil thoughts and for
nications, thefts, murders, adul
teries, deeds of coveting and wic
kedness, as well as deceit, sensu
ality, envy, slander, pride and
foolishness. All these evil things
proceed from within and defile
the man.” (Mark 7:21-23)
No set of teachings can remove
man’s inner problem. Man-made
doctrines only put a sugar coating
over the real issues. Man is
separated from God by sin — an
active or passive attitude of re
bellion toward God and His abso
lute principles. The guilt and
penalty of this sin must be re
moved before man can ever hope
to have a relationship with the
living God. According to what
God has stated in the Bible, the
only just and legal payment for
sin is death.
Two thousand years ago, God
met this required penalty Him
self through the death of Jesus
Christ on the cross. Being God,
Jesus could carry the death penal
ty for all humanity. He now offers
“salvation” to all — not a utopian
society, but a removal of the guilt
and sin from each one of us, es
tablishing a vital relationship be
tween man and God. To come
into this relationship, one must
willfully submit to Him, asking
His forgiveness for our rebellious
attitude and putting ourselves
under His rightful authority.
Christ promises to come into our
lives by His spirit, forgive us, and
lead us in the most fulfilling and
abundant life possible.
CARP, Moon, and the Unifica
tion Church offer a false hope to a
dying world. Their maze of twist
ed idealologies may sound intri
guing, but it will eventually lead
to their destruction.
Don’t be fooled by their ap
proach. Don’t get sucked in by
their “Christian” vocabulary. The
Bible states that “even Satan dis
guises himself as an angel of light”
(2 Corinthians 11:14) — and so
they are. Their teaching and “di
vine principle” is in no way divine
but just one more cleverly di-
guised highway, lined with beaut
iful fresh flowers, that leads to
