WASHINGTON — The Secur
ities and Exchange Commission
has expanded a year-long investi
gation of the Hunt family of Texas
and is now examining their deal
ings with some of the nation’s top
banks, it was reported today.
The Washington Post said
documents made public this week
indicate the investigation has led
far from its original topic — the
Hunts’ speculation in the silver
market and purchase of a large
part of the Bache Group Inc., a
Wall Street brokerage house.
The SEC, it said, now wants
details of other transactons, in
cluding a $1.1 billion loan to the
Hunts’ Placid Oil Co. arranged
last spring from a group of banks.
The loan, arranged with the aid of
Federal Reserve Board Chairman
Paul Volcker, was intended to
help pay Hunt debts after silver
prices collapsed.
What the SEC is looking for is
still secret, said the Post. The
agency’s mandate is to protect in
vestors in publicly owned com
panies. All banks involved in the
investigation are public com
panies, as is Bache. The Post said
SEC officials insist the latest sub
poenas are directly related to the
original investigation.
The SEC, it said, has sub
poenaed records of all Hunt deal
ings with the family’s chief bank
er, First National Bank in Dallas,
and late last month told the First
National Bank of Chicago and Re
public National Bank of Dallas it
wants some of their records, too.
Other banks and brokerage
houses have been served with
subpoenas in the investigation, it
said, including Merrill Lynch
Pierce Fenner & Smith, where
Treasury Secretary Donald Regan
was chairman during the period
covered by the SEC subpoenas.
A Merrill Lynch spokesman
said Wednesday the firm is
cooperating with tht investigalit
and is not believed to be a targets
the securities probe. A Badieol
cial said the firm also is g
SEC documents and doesnolts
sider itself a target.
The Post said that while maj
documents relating to the Hu::!
transactions have been turnel'
over to the SEC since its inve%.[
tion began in April, the HuntsiW
are trying to cut off the flowajj
keep what they call "confideata 1
business information” fromtl!
eyes of federal investigators. I
Six members of the Huntfani
filed suit against the SEC in Da!)
Monday, asking that the SEC)
stopped from getting records)
the Hunts’dealings with theFis
Natonal Bank in Dallas. Theys)
they sued to “avoid losingn
rights protected by federally
and contended SEC lawyer®
“improperly expanded the sop
of their inquiry.”
