After one day of competition, the Mustangs pulled out to a five- point lead behind a 1-2 perform ance in the 500-yard freestyle to take the lead over the heavily fa vored Longhorns. Competition continues today. The Aggies, who only placed once in the first-day events, are currently sixth. S.M.U. scored 155.5 in the first day of competition to edge Texas at 150.0. Houston followed at 84.5; Arkansas at 76; Texas Christ ian at 22; Texas A&M at 21; Texas Tech at 19; and Rice at 10. Jimmy Lee and Chuck Bauman finished 1-2 in the 500 yards frees tyle Thursday to assist Southern Methodist. Bill Stafford took a first in the 200-yard individual medley for Texas and Kris Kirchner finished first in the 50-yard freestyle to gar ner more points for the Lon ghorns. Kirchner also anchored Texas’ 400 medley relay team composed of Clay Britt, Nick Nevid and Scott Spann. SMU finished less than a second behind Texas’ 3:15.18 at 3:16.17 to take second.
