(... the third part in a hopefully never-ending, at least until
March 28 and 30, series on the triumphs and tribulations of the
giant and his faithful followers ... )
As we left the giant last time, he was getting ready to travel to
that den of wickedness and perversion, Austoned. I am happy to
report that the giant beheaded Sour Lemons and the rest of his
punk rock group with their own sharp-but-now-sawed-off horn to
restore sanity to the once thriving metropolis of Austoned.
Later, the giant was able to squash the funny frogs of the
“killer” to revenge an earlier pitfall. The giant had fallen asleep
against the funny frogs in the first meeting and almost did again
but at the last minute. Magical “call me Merlin” Metcalf, came
through with a quick spell and some hot coffee to keep the victory.
He was fortunate to get out of that frogs den with what he got.
But, once again, the giant will face another tough test. This time
Gambling “lucky” Lewis will sneak into the the giant’s castle to try
to draw a winning hand with his hotshot hit man, Rob “the sting”
Williams.
“Lucky” will bring his own special type of gambling into the
match. He likes to run and gun, gambling for the most part. But he
takes a while sometimes ... a long while. He has been known to
shake the dice and shuffle the cards for eight or 10 minutes until he
gets it down right.
But as the gambler he is, he wins some and losses others. A
couple of times “lucky’s” plan has backfired. He once drew the
four 10s he wanted from the deck but dealt his opponent four
jacks.
“Lucky’s” followers are not as loyal or faithful as the legions of
followers the giant has. The giant’s are always there urging him
on.
Magical “call me Merlin” Metcalf would have it no other way.
He likes the noise the followers make. (I think he secretly plugs
the giant’s ears up before each match.) He likes to see if the
opponent will go deaf at the giant’s home, the Hollerin’ House.
Also, Magical Metcalf seems to cast his best spells when the
legions get rowdy. He likes the effect it has on the outcome of his
spells. The magical quality of the faithful adds to the spell and
changes it, to make it even more powerful.
Magical “call me Merlin” will need all the help he can get from
the loyal and faithful because Gambling “lucky” Lewis will try to
steal away a win with a couple of hidden aces.
The last time the giant took on “lucky,” at the Red-eye Lewis
Gambling Hall and Casino, he rolled the dice well. Unfortunate
ly, “lucky” had his poker face on, sleeves rolled up and hand
warmed up to barely out-roll the giant.
“Sting” had a great time in the last meeting as he tried to break
the giant’s knees. He almost succeeded, too, as the giant could
not swat that far down to get rid of the pesky “Sting. ”
“Sting” is also good at bringing opponents to their knees with
his famous razzle-dazzle, behind-the-back-double-pump-in-yo -
face long shot. On their knees, his opponents are about his size
and he can take his time and shoot them to rags.
Oflate, however, “lucky” and “Sting” have been rope-a-doped.
They haven’t been able to collect from anybody like they once did.
He has been out-drawn, out-bluffed and out-rolled by the likes
of the “killer” Killingsworth and his funny frogs, Hapless Haller
and his bumbling bears, and Marginal Meyers and his red pirates
from the wastelands.
He always seems to have his troubles with groups that are not
supposed to be as good as his. Even Ignorance-is (call me any
thing) Bliss was able to come through and beat “lucky’s” group.
They played the best match of the year as far as maniacs’ games go.
In those matches, “Sting” went from a mean, dead-eye, trou
ble-shooter to a funny little kid with a pop gun.
“Lucky” has broken out of his slump against the birds of the
bayou, though.
The “Sting” romped and stomped his way through the meeting
and broke the bird’s backs. He shot from the hip with a deadly
eye. He broke a few knees, elbows and ankles as “lucky’s” group
rolled their way to victory and plucked the birds.
But in this meeting, “lucky” has to come to the giant’s castle and
meet his loyal legions of faithful followers. And the faithfull will be
out to fill the castle this time.
Against the totally evil Duke Sutton of Mutton, the castle was
not even filled. It was a real shame.
Magical Metcalfs spells only work to full capacity when the
castle battle-grounds are full. Nothing can stand in the way then.
The only way for the giant to get another shot at the evil duke
would be to get on that mystical golden path to San Antone. The
path will have all kinds of evil things lurking in the shadows.
Will the giant be able to out-shoot “lucky” to get another shot at
the evil duke? or will he come to his knees at the “Sting’s” pop
pistol?
Can the giant lean down enough to swat “Sting” and out-roll
“lucky” or will the giant lose his pants in the encounter?
Stay tuned to the tale of the giant and the golden path to San
Antone to find out ...

Cowboys ignore Pearson
United Press International
DALLAS — Running back Pre
ston Pearson said he may be near
retirement because the Dallas
Cowboys have not offered him a
contract.
Pearson’s $101,000-a-year con
tract expired following the 1980
season and the Cowboys did not
make a qualifying offer before the
recent contract deadline.
“I think it’s pretty obvious that
they don’t want me, ” Pearson said
this week. “If there had been any
interest, I think I would have re
ceived an offer.”
Pearson now is eligible to sign
with another team but has said he
does not want to move.
