‘Children’s Hour’ is tense
RVs preparing for Mardi Gras trek

The Texas A&M University
theater arts production of “The
Children’s Hour,” a play by Lil
lian Helman, opened Thursday
night in Rudder Forum.
About 40 people saw the tense
and moving portrayal of two young
women whose lives are drastically
changed by the lie of a girl.
The play was low-key at first,
with a group of teen-agers at a
boarding school practicing their
Latin, sewing and elocution.

When Mary Tilford, played by
Melissa Bradly, entered the
scene, the atmosphere began to
change.
She constantly bullied the other
girls, forcing them to do things
they did not want to do.
When one of the owners of the
school, Karen Wright, played by
Laura Bellomy, confronted Mary
Tilford with lying and not doing
her work, she faked a heart at
tack.
After being punished, Tilford
ran away from the school to her
grandmother, Mrs. Tilford, play
ed by Sharon Barrow.
In order to keep her grand
mother from sending her back to
the school, Tilford lied, saying
that Karen Wright and her friend,
Martha, played by Miki Bone,
were lovers.
Melissa Bradly’s portrayal of a
spoiled child with problems was so
convincing that one woman in the
audience said, “I just want to go
and stick out my tongue at her.”
The tension that followed the
accusation can be credited to the
persuasive acting of Bellomy and
Bone, both of whom displayed
such emotions of anger, sadness
and, finally, helplessness, that I
couldn’t help but feel it also.
Tim Stimson, who played
Karen Wright’s boyfriend, should
also be noted for his performance,
as well as Roy O’Valle for his di
recting.
“The Children’s Hour” will con
tinue through Saturday. Another
set of performances will start
Thursday and last until March 7.
Tickets are $2.50 for Texas A&M
students, and $3.50 for the public.
They are available at the door.

The Ross Volunteers will leave
Sunday to participate in the Mardi
Gras King Rex parade in New
Orleans.
The largest parade in Mardi
Gras, the King Rex parade is held
on the last day of the festival.
The RVs will lead the parade
performing a King Rex manual of
arms, a sequence of different
weapon movements, Roy Brant
ley, RV commander, said.
“The fancy drill ends as a salute
to the King Rex who is usually a
prominent citizen chosen to be
the King Rex of the parade,”
Brantley said.
Brantley said about 2.5 million
people are predicted to watch the
nine-mile-long parade.
A total of 104 RV juniors and
seniors will take part in the parade
as well as the fish Drill Team,
Brantley said. “We will be repre
senting Texas A&M as well as the
state of Texas, ” he said.
The RVs will go by bus to New
Orleans and stay on the U.S.S.
