Widow, mother assumes
husband’s role as sheriff
United Press International
GROVETON — The latest woman to become a
sheriff in Texas is a 55-year-old mother of five who
sees herself as an administrator, avoids patroling but
still carries a pistol in her purse.
Peggy Evans was appointed by the Trinity County
Commissioners Court on Feb. 12 to finish the unex
pired term of her husband, Lynn, who died of cancer
Feb. 6. A tornado wrecked the family property Feb.
10.
“That was some week,” she said. “It changed my
life quite a bit.
“I’ve got five deputies who can take care of the
patrol. I stay real busy right here in the office. A
sheriff s job is much different now than when Lynn
took office.
“He was everyone’s father confessor as well as
chief law enforcement official in the county,” she
said. “Now it’s a paper game. I spend my time just
making administrative decisions and trying to stay
ahead of government regulations.”
Evans said she accepted the job because it was her
husband’s dying wish to avoid departmental turmoil
from rival deputies battling for the job. Four of them
applied for the job.
“I called them in separately and asked them how
1
they felt about working for me,” she said. “Theyii
said they wanted to keep their jobs. All I ask is ik
they do their job and remain loyal to me.”
Residents appear willing to give Evans a c

bleacher crowds, the “lady bugs”
of Chemung County, N.Y., push
energy conservation.
Like the famous cheerleader
for the Padres baseball team, the
bugs were created to generate en
thusiasm — in this case, a federal
conservation project that was
floundering until they began buz
zing.
Since a half dozen women of
Chemung donned the yellow and
black outfits, which have plastic
wine glasses for eyes and hardhats
for heads, the local program has
taken off.
“People began paying atten
tion, coming to our workshops and
saving energy,” said Patti Moran,
the creature’s maker. “Everyone
will talk to a bug.”
The energy program is one of
20 that ACTION, the federal
volunteer agency, is sponsoring in
cities, towns and counties from
Chemung to Salt Lake City.
It is an offshoot from last year’s
highly successful program!:
Fitchburg, Mass., which dre>
participation from more
of the 38,000 residents will
households averaging a
energy savings.
Last summer, the CheAiij
County Home Energy Consero
tion (CHEC) had high hopes, be
scarce participation. Folks intk
rural county of 100,000
paid little mind to daily enerj
tips, conservation fliers andwoi
shops.
“Let’s face it, energy isnti
that exciting, ” said Moran, enett
coordinator for the county’s estffi
sion service. “We needed toju
up the program and
catchy and humorous.”
