President
interested
in summit
United Press International
WASHINGTON — President
Reagan today expressed strong in
terest in a summit meeting with
Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev
and said the United States has “no
intention” of getting mired, Viet-
nam-style, in the war in El Sal
vador.
Reagan, appearing at a briefing
on his economic recovery package
in the Executive Office Building
auditorium, was asked about
Brezhnev’s call for a summit in an
address to the 26th Communist
1 Party congress in Moscow
Monday.
“I was most interested in his
suggestion and it is something that
now we will discuss,” Reagan re
plied. He said the discussions will
include the State Department,
the Cabinet and “most particular
ly” America s allies, including
British Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher when she visits
Washington this week.
The president said he would
not demand a set agenda before
such a summit could be held. But
he also indicated Soviet behavior,
now hampering the U. S-Soviet re
lationship, would be important.
“I have repeatedly said I am
willing to negotiate a solution —
legitimate negotiations aimed at
verifiable reductions in nuclear
weapons,” he said.
“I also made it plain at such a
negotiating table, if and when this
takes place, there should be other
considerations, what has been
termed by Mr. Brezhnev as link
age,” he added.
“I wouldn’t try to guess what’s
in their thinking,” Reagan said of
Soviet motives, “but let’s just say I
found it very interesting. ”
Asked whether he might
appear to be delaying summit
talks, Reagan replied: “I don’t
think it’s a case that we ll be ob
viously and intentionally dragging
our feet. This isn’t something you
say, Come on over and we’ll
talk.’”
Asked whether there was a pos
sibility the United States could
become involved in El Salvador,
Reagan replied:
“I know there is great concern
over that. I think it’s part of a Viet
nam syndrome, but we have no
intention of that kind of involve
ment.
“But there is no question we
are in support of the government
there against those who believe in
the violent overthrow of the gov
ernment there,” he added.
Monday, Reagan disavowed
budget director David Stockman’s
statement that a 2-cent-a-gallon
increase in the federal gasoline tax
might be considered as part of his
economic recovery package.

Where does science fiction end and
reality begin? It’s all in the mind’s eye.
Be it the creative imagination used to
produce Star Wars, The Black Hole, and
The Empire Strikes Back, or the more
scientific approach of hypothesis test
ing and experimentation, the distant
galaxies of science fiction coalesce into
reality with the advanced technology
now being developed at a company
called TRW.
It was the Defense and Space Systems
Group of TRW who made possible the
Viking Lander biological experiment
which looked for life on Mars and the
High Energy Astronomical Observatory
which looks for quasars, pulsars and
black holes in deep space. Profession
als at TRW-DSSG are now involved in
such impressive technologies as high
energy lasers, communications systems,
plus other future projects still consider
ed science fiction.
A company called TRW will be on
campus...
