CHICAGO — The maker of a
Texas-made battery-powered car
that was banned from the Chicago
Auto Show says major automobile
and oil companies influenced
show promoters because they
want to block sales of the car.
However, civil rights leaders
say Amectran Inc., the Dallas-
based maker of the prototype car,
was banned from the exhibition
because it is minority-owned.
Auto show sponsors Sunday
said there were a number of legal
questions surrounding Amectran
find Electric Automobile Distri
butorships of America, creators
and distributors of the banned XR-
1.
Show officials said Ainectran
filed for bankruptcy in Dallas in
May and is being investigated by
“several government agencies.”
Promoters said the firm also in
tended to sell distributorships at
the show.
In 1975, the Texas attorney
general’s office barred Amectran
President Edmund Ramirez and
the firm from selling unregistered
securities in the state.
Ramirez charged the major
auto and oil companies want to
block sales of the XR-1.
“I could get you a list of the top
100 companies in this country,
with legal staffs that would fill this
room, and each one of them is
being investigated by somebody,”
Ramirez said. “We are being
found guilty without anything
being proven.”
Mike Greco, representative of
U.S. Electricar Corp., an electric
car manufacturer that was allowed
in the show, said he thought the
major auto manufacturers and
dealers put pressure on show
promoters to ban the XR-1.
“The big auto companies are
running scared — they’re not
nearly as far along in the produc
tion of electric cars,” he said. U.S.
Electricar is an Anthol, Mass.,
firm.
Two civil rights activists pro
tested the action in a letter to
Richard Everman, president of
the Chicago Trade Association,
and demonstrators gathered out
side the auto show on opening day
Saturday.
Dr. Ralph Abernathy, former
head of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference, and
Georgia state Rep. Hosea Wil
liams said the XR-1 yvas “the only
minority-owned automobile in
(the) show and perhaps the first
such minority-owned Automobile
in United States history (that
would have been displayed in a
major auto show. ”
