THE SENA TOR
THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT NEWSLETTER
FEBRUARY 1981
One of the main goals of Stu
dent Govenrment this year is to
better inform you of our ac
tivities. As you learn more about
what we’re involved in, I hope
you have no hesitation to give us
your opinion, let us know what
other areas you’d like to see us
involved in, and in general, give
us your gripes so we can better
identify where positive changes
are needed.
Last November, we printed a
newsletter called The Senator
and passed out 7,500 copies
through the dorms, bus stops
and the MSG. Yet, with 33,000
students. The Senator had a
very limited distribution, espe
cially with the off-campus stu
dents. With this issue of the
newsletter, we decided to go
through the battalion in an effort
to reach more of our constituen
cy. I hope by reading through
the articles you find something
that sparks your interest enough
to give us a call and share a new
idea, voice an opinion or just
discuss a concern.
The most important part of
these two pages is the list of
senators and their phone num
bers. In reading over the list.
PRESIDENT
you will find that you have two
senators; one represents your
living area, and one represents
your college and/or class. Copy
down their names and numbers
and give them a call, even if for
no other reason than to check up
on them and let them know you
have an opinion. Your call will
not be an imposition in any way.
The senators want to be called,
appreciate hearing concerns
from fellow students and will
treat your call as a responsibility
and an opportunity. Nothing is
more encouraging for the
senators than seeing that stu
dents are concerned enough to
voice their opinion and suggest
creative, realistic alternatives.
In addition to this newsletter,
the student senators have been
passing out opinion surveys in
the MSG, conducting classroom
polls and telephone surveys to
both inform you and get your
opinion on many issues. Also,
the senators have been speaking
at dorm councils, wing meetings,
college councils and various
other student organizations.
These speeches provide a chance
for you to learn more about cur
rent student problems, student

representation and most impor
tantly, they are a good opportu
nity to have some questions an
swered and get your opinion
known.
So far this year the Student
Senate has discussed everything
from allowing a beer pub on
campus to increasing the “happy
hour” at the Remote Computing
Center. There is alot going on
this Spring that you need to
know about, and alot you can
become involved with. This
month, we’re in the process of
allocating the 2.1 million dollars
you pay in Student Services
Fees. This is a chance for you to
have a direct voice in how your
money is spent by contacting
someone on the Finance Com
mittee. If you don’t like a rule in
the University Blue Book, con
tact the Rules and Regulations
Committee. If you have a gripe
about the city government, a lo
cal business or if you’re just curi
ous about what issues are coming
up in the state legislature, talk to
our External Affairs Committee.
Anything that has to do with a
professor, grading policies, Q-
drops or curriculum can be han
dled by the Academic Affairs
Committee. Finally, if you kvt
a gripe about parking, athletic
ticket distribution, or anything
in general, contact the Student
Services Committee. If you want
to talk about any issue at al,
contact either your senator,!
Vice President or one of us, ami
we ll be more than happy to do
all that we can.
As the main representative
body for students at this Univer
sity, we have a big responsibl
ty. We’re effective only as hr as
the accuracy with which we rep
resent your desires. Our accura
cy is only as effective as your
input. I hope these two pages
will give you a better idea of
what we do and serve as inspira
tion for you to become involved
Gig ’em.
