Women’s tennis team
beats McClennon, 8-0
By RICK STOLLE
Battalion Staff
After beating Southwest Texas
University, 8-1, Saturday, there is
little left for the Texas A&M
women’s tennis team to do but
practice up for an upcoming tour
nament, right? Wrong.
The Aggies swept McClennon
Junior College Tuesday, 8-0, in a
match that had been called up,
unexpectedly, late last week.
“They were awfully young,”
said coach Jan Cannon. “But I only
played one senior and one junior
today. I played all of our freshmen
and sophomores.”
McClennon was one girl short
and was forced to play one of their
girls twice at the fifth and sixth
spots. They also did not play a
third doubles match.
In singles: Liliana Fernandez
beat Donna Nueringer 6-2, 6-0;
Pam Hill defeated Tammie Kelley
6-2, 6-2; Amy Gloss defeated Elda
Salinas 6-0, 6-0; Sonja Hutcherson
beat Melissa Mooty 6-2, 6-1 and
Kim Alston, who played both the
five and six singles lost to both
Mary Hise 6-1, 6-1 and Kendall
Gurry 6-4, 6-2 of A&M.
The doubles matches saw Closs-
Laura Hanna defeat Nueringer-
Kelley 6-4, 6-1 and Maylen
Hooton-Judy Willard beat Sali-
nas-Mooty 6-0, 6-2.
The Aggies are preparing to
leave Thursday for a five-way
meet in Tempe, Ariz. The team
will face Pac-10 teanqs Arizona
State University, Arizona Univer
sity, Grand Canyon University
and Cal-Fullerton.
Holmes fight
on April 11
United Press International
NEW YORK — Larry Holmes
will defend his World Boxing
Council heavyweight title against
Trevor Berbick of Canada April 11
at Las Vegas, Nev., it was
announced Tuesday.
The bout between the unbeaten
Holmes and Berbick, the Cana
dian champion, will be promoted
by Don King.
Cannon said it will be a tough
tournament in which each team
will play head to head dual match
es with all the other teams in the
tournament.
“All the other matches are con
ference matches,” she said. “I ex
pect them to be ready to play good
tennis.”
She said she is hoping for a 3-1
showing from the tournament but
will wait and play each match as it
comes.
“Arizona State will be the
strongest team there,” she said.
“The rest of the teams, us in
cluded, are evenly matched.”
The lineup for the Ags will be
the same it has been for every
match of the young spring season.
“We’ve been playing consis
tently, I see no reason to change
the line-up now,” she said.
Singles are scheduled to be:
Fernandez, Hill, Hooton, Gloss,
Hutcherson and Hanna.
Doubles will be: Closs-Hanna,
Hill-Hutcherson and Femandez-
Hooton.
Judy Willard will go as the
seventh singles and extra player.
Should an injury occur during a
match or should another team
bring a seventh player, Willard
would play.
Cannon indicated she would
pull Fernandez from doubles
should she show signs of tiring or
her shoulder bothering her.
