V Dallas indoor meet may become 'best' THE BATTALION Page 9 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1981 United Press International DALLAS — Big-time track and field came to Texas last weekend and it appears that it will be back. “There’s no doubt, ” said world in door mile record holder Eamonn Coghlan of Ireland, “that this will become one of the best, if not the best, indoor meets in the United States. There is no doubt.” Coghlan and a field of internation al stars took part in the first Dallas Times Herald Invitational, a meet held in the 1-year-old Reunion Arena. A crowd of almost 12,000 showed up despite inclement weather and for their troubles they saw two world records, one American record and the longest triple jump ever re corded in this country. The performances were helped along by a new track built for the occasion and all the competitors agreed it was extra fast. “We were helped by the fact that the track was very fast,” said Stanley Floyd, who broke the world record in the 60-yard dash with a clocking of 6.04. “And we were helped by there being a great field here. It was the best field I’ve ever competed against in a 60-yard race. ” Floyd, now enrolled at the Uni versity of Houston, was timed in 6.04 in both his trial heat and in the finals, where he nipped Georgia’s Mel Lat- tany. Among the also-rans were Har vey Glance, Herkie Walls, Jerome Deal and Georgia football star Hers- chel Walker, who finished fourth in his heat and did not make the finals. Alice Brown, running for the Shaklee Track Club in Los Angeles, also set a world record of 6.62 in the women’s 60. DON’T FORGET!! Schmaltz’s Special is Tonight A SCHMALTZ — ICE TEA — CHIPS a 55 .
