Track Eight members of the Texas A6cM University men’s and women’s track teams have been invited to the Dallas Times-Herald’s Invitation al Indoor Track and Field Meet Saturday in Dallas’ Reunion Arena. Nationally ranked and world class athletes competing in 22 major track and field events will appear. Four of the Aggie athletes are members of the 1980 SWC champion men’s team. Four women — Jana Graves, Ellen Smith, Evely'n Smith and Sandra Cooper — will be participating in the 4-by-176-yard relay. The four usually run the mile relay for the women’s team, but in this event will simply run one lap each around the 176-yard track. Athletes were selected on the basis of their performances over the past year. Aggie men participating in the Invitational will be Leslie Kerr in the 440-yard dash (NCAA runner-up last season), Randy Hall in the pole vault (NCAA 1980 indoor and outdoor champion), James Howard in the high jump (SWC champion and member of the 1980 American Oly mpic Team) and Billy Busch in the 60-yard high hurdles (SWC champion). - Women’s swimming Texas A&M’s women’s swimming team will be in San Marcos Satur day to take on Southwest Texas State in a dual meet. Last Friday, the Aggie women led Rice until the final relay before falling just short, 77.5-71.5 in Houston. On Saturday, the Houston Cougars defeated the Aggies, 89-42. Men’s golf The Texas A&M men’s golf team will be at the Atoscocita Invitation al Saturday and Sunday in Houston. Men’s basketball The Texas Aggies, 1-7, will host the Baylor Bears, 5-3, Saturday at 7:30 in G. Rollie White Coliseum. Fans wishing to buy tickets may do so at windows 4, 5 and 7 in front of the Coliseum. Windows open at 6 p.m. There will be no women’s game. Despite shooting at a 58 percent clip against Houston Wednesday night, the Aggies fell victim to sophomore Rob Williams’ 33 points and a Houston stall with just over nine minutes left to lose their ninth game in their last 10 tries, 76-71. Fifteen college basketball players from Texas, including two from Texas A&M University, have been nominated for selection to the All-Star teams competing in the 10th annual Pizza Hut Basketball Classic. They include: Rynn Wright and Vernon Smith of Texas A&M; Terry Adolph, West Texas State; Roshem Amie and Anthony Burns, Texas-El Paso; B.B. Davis and Mike Olliver, Lamar; Kenneth Green, Pan American; Gary Hopkins, Howard Payne; Melvin Polk, Texas- Arlington; Charles Spurlin, Southwest Texas State; Ed Turner, Texas A&I; Gordon Welch, SMU; David Bums of Dallas, attending St. Ixjuis; and Alton Lister of Dallas, attending Arizona State. Women’s basketball The Aggie Ladies, after knocking off TCU Wednesday in the first round of the first women’s Southwest Conference Tournament, were defeated Thursday in the second round by Texas Tech, 62-51. The Aggies shot a miserable 32.9 percent of their shots, 23-of-70 from the field. Guard Shery l Clark led the Aggies with just 10 points. Cathy Fuller added nine and Kelley Sullivan seven. There is still hope, however, as Texas A&M falls to the consolation bracket and will play Arkansas, a 110-61 loser to Texas Thursday, at 4:30 p.m. today in Hofheinz Pavillion. Bears in town Saturday Metcalf proud of Ag fans By RITCHIE PRIDDY Battalion Staff The frustrated Texas Aggies re turn to the court Saturday night in what has all of the makings of a barn burner as they entertain the stumb ling Baylor Bears in G. Rollie White Coliseum. The Aggies are trying to rebound from a disappointing four-game los ing streak that has seen them come close to victory' in every game but only to have it slip away in the final minutes. The Aggies’ latest setback came Wednesday night at the hands of Rob Williams, Clyde Drexler and Co. (otherwise known as the University of Houston), as they stopped the Aggies, 76-71. Wednesday night was not only bad for the Aggies, though, as the Bears found themselves leaving Daniel Meyer Coliseum in Ft. Worth won dering what happened to their title hopes as they were upset by TCU, 58-50. It was the third loss in a row for the Bears, who, at the beginning of the week found themselves tied with Houston for the conference lead. With the loss to TCU, Baylor’s sea son record falls to 10-8, and 5-3 in conference action. Texas A&M stands at 8-9 on the season and 1-7 in league play. Even with the Houston loss Wednesday night Head Coach Shel by Metcalf saw some good things that might hint of an Aggie comeback in the near future. “We shot better in the Houston game. It was the the first time that we have shot over 50 percent (59.,3) in a conference game this year,’’ Metcalf said. Rynn Wright led the Aggies with 18 points, Roy Jones had 15 and Reg gie Roberts chipped in 14. Metcalf was especially pleased with Jones’ performance saying it was the best game that he has played all year. “Three good games in a row. He’s getting better, he’s really getting better, ’ Metcalf said of the 6-7 soph- Shelby Metcalf "But everybody has got to play (well) for us to win. Up to now we’ve played just well enough to get beat.’’ Although senior co-captain Ver non Smith hasn’t played too well in recent games he needs only four points to break John Beasley’s record of 1,594 points and stands an excel lent chance to surpass him as the all-time leading Aggie scorer Satur day night. “We were picked too high to start out with, ” Metcalf said looking back at a disappointing season, thus far, “We lost three starters off of last year’s team when you count Rudy flunking out. As hard as we have played, though, something good is going to happen.” Even with the lackluster season Metcalf was very pleased with the support of the student body: It has been wonderful, just super. They’ve carried their load, now it is up to us to win for them. “The band, yell leaders and stu dent body have done a hell-of-a-job and that’s what separates A&M from other universities. Its been real posi tive. Everybody is pulling for us and were doing our damndest to repay them.” Metcalf acknowledged the fact that Texas A&M athletics have really suffered this year and he said he could understand that some fans might write off the team as a failure. Anybody can follow a winner, he said, but it takes a special kind of fan to support a stumbling team and Texas A&M has that kind of fan sup port. "We think more of the student body for what they have done this year than what they did last year. Metcalf seemed to think that the Aggies are coming out of their slump. The last two games the team has nearly played up to the level ex pected of them. “I think that if we had played as well as we did W’ednesday night against the other conference teams we would be 4-4. We have not lost by more than nine points in conference. We have played close games and that is what makes me think we will break out of this slump. ” Following the Baylor game the Aggies take a week off before enter taining Texas Tech Feb. 7 in G. Rol lie. While the break will give the Aggies much-needed time to re group and start anew Metcalf was a little skeptical of the break. “I don’t know if that (break) is good or bad. I guess it would be good if we were at the top but if you’re at the bottom it’s like you’re playing poker and losing all the time. The loser is always saying ‘deal them’. “You would be amazed at how many ways you can put your socks on and tie your shoes when you are in a losing streak. You know how it is when you’re winning you do some thing a certain way you want to stick with it. Last year we started win ning and I wore my maroon coat and camel slacks. This year I’ve gone through my whole wardrobe. If this keeps up I’ll have to buy some more clothes.” Hey there good lookin It ain't chicken soup we're cookin We've got a party on.
