Evans Library completes changes made in author catalog system
By FRANK L. CHRISTLIEB
Battalion Reporter
Evans Library users no longer
must know the formal names of au
thors to be able to find books written
by them. Books formerly listed
under “Clemens, Samuel Lan-
ghorne” now fall under “Twain,
Mark” also.
Leila Payne, head of the proces
sing division at Evans Library, said
changes have been made in the au
thor-title portion of the catalog.
Each heading card now lists the
name by which an author is more
commonly known, she said.
Payne said rather than removing
and retyping the several hundred
cards that have been changed, the
library is using a system of guide
cards.
The new heading on each card has
been printed in pencil above the pre
vious heading, which has been cros
sed out, saving the library the time
and trouble of retyping each card.
A pink card marks the end of the
set of cards behind each guide card in
the catalog. There are also cross-
references that refer catalog users
from the old listings to the new ones,
making them easier to find.

Payne said planning for the catalog
changes began about two years ago
after publication of the second edi
tion of the Anglo-American Catalog
ing Rules.
The rules, used by the Library of
Congress and many academic librar
ies in the United States, Canada,
Great Britain and Australia, is a list
ing of standard rules for library cata
loging which also outlines changes in
previous rules as well.
The libraries in these countries are
attempting to standardize library
cataloging by making the changes
outlined in the rules.
Payne said no complaints or prob-
lems have resulted from the
changes. She said she does not fore
see any major problems resulting
from the catalog changes.
A list of headings used in the card
catalog, as well as those changed by
the new rules, is available at the re
ference desk in the library. Payne
added that members of the library
staff will help anyone who has trou
ble understanding the changes.
