TCU trailed at the half, 27-21, but caught up and went ahead five minutes deep in the second period on a shot by Browder which made the score 29-28. The surprising Horned Frogs thus finished the first half of the Southwest Conference season with a 4-4 record and boosted their overall mark to 7-11. RICE 46, TEXAS 40 AUSTIN — Kenny Austin scored four points in overtime Wednes day night, including a dunk shot with 18 seconds left that clinched the victory, to lift Rice to a 46-40 win over Texas and snap the Owls’ 20-game losing streak against the Longhorns. Rice, the surprising success story of the Southwest Conference this season, had not beaten Texas since 1970. Ricky Pierce scored the last six Rice points in regulation to throw the game in an extra period and Austin sank two free throws with 1:16 remaining to put the Owls in front in the overtime. Austin then put the game away at 44-40 on a fast-break stuff. Texas’ only two points in the overtime came on a jump shot by LaSalle Thompson with 22 seconds to go that cut the deficit to 42-40. A sagging defense by Rice limited Thompson, who had scored 84 points in his last three games, to 10 points. Texas led for most of the contest, but with 4:59 remaining Pierce sank two free throws to put Rice in front at 36-34. Texas scored eight unanswered points late in the first half to give the Longhorns their biggest lead at 21-13. But the Owls scored the last six points of the half to close to 22-19 at intermission. Rice moved to 9-8 for the season and is 5-3 in Southwest Conference while Texas dropped to 8-10 and 3-5. Virdell Howland led the Lon ghorns with 12 points.
