WASHINGTON — The Rev.
Bailey Smith, whose remarks about
Jews made him one of the most con
troversial leaders of the Southern
Baptist Convention, said Monday he
will seek a second term as head of the
nation’s largest Protestant denomi
nation.
“I plan to be renominated,” Smith
told the 13.4 million-member de
nomination’s official news agency.
“People in high denominational
posts as well as people in the field
have been encouraging. I feel I need
to do it.”
Smith, pastor of First Southern
Baptist Church of Del City, Okla.,
drew national attention as a leader of
the conservative forces in the Baptist
battle over the Bible and how it
should be read and interpreted.
But it was his remark that God
does not hear the prayers of a Jew,
made at a conservative political rally
in Dallas during the presidential
campaign, that thrust the outspoken
Smith into national prominence.
Fueling the fire, Smith was
quoted later in the fall as joking dur
ing one of his sermons that Jet
“have funny noses.”
The remarks caused a fluny
criticism from both Jewishti
Christian leaders, causing Smitl
argue that he was not anti-Semij
and to seek a meeting with nati®
Jewish leaders.
At that meeting he signed a state
ment saying Baptists “abhor,
demn and reject anti-Semitism,’’!)®
he refused to withdraw the remark
He said he had “distinctive
gical beliefs that he cannot coat
promise.”
The controversy, which S
said brought threatening and
sive telephone calls to his home, Id
to rumors that he would not seektk
traditional second term usi
granted conference presidents,
In addition, moderates in thedt
nomination have begun organia:
to counter the influence of the biblk
al conservatives.
The moderates, however, hast
not decided whether to propose a
opponent to Smith. Traditional),
SBC presidents seeking a seed
term are unopposed.

WASHINGTON — The National
Coalition on Television Violence
says 16 persons have killed them
selves imitating the Russian roulette
scene from the movie “Deer Hun
ter,” shown last year on television.
“This is still further proof that
television violence kills and that on-
the-air warnings are of little value,”
said the coalition, formed last year to
monitor TV violence.
The coalition, in its January news
letter, listed the names of 15 persons
it said died imitating the “Deer Hun
ter” scene, dating back to March 20.
It said the 16th was reported in
Pennsylvania this month, but gave
no name.
It also said two other persons were
seriously wounded, including an
“unidentified White House Secret
Service agent” on Nov. 21.
The coalition said stations in
Atlanta, Denver, Phoenix, Louisvil
le, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, Fort
Wayne, Ind., and St. Louis plan to
show uncut versions of the film this
year.
On another subject, the coalition
said more X-rated films were pro
duced in 1980 than those for general
audiences, with production of G-
rated films falling from 32 percent of
all films made in 1968 to only 4 per
cent last year.
The coalition said it began moni
toring theater movies last Septem
ber because its own surveys show 45
percent of television violence comes
from movies shown on TV.
The Motion Picture Association:
America uses the following voluntir
rating system: G for genera] anJi
ence, all ages admitted; PC It
parental guidance suggested, so®
material may not be suitable forck
dren; R for restricted, under 17 if
quires accompanying parent or aiii
guardian; and X for no one under 1!
admitted (the age limit may vary-
certain areas).
The monitoring showed PG-rats
movies averaged 15.6 violent xt
per hour, while R-rated moviesaw
aged 15.1. About 61 percent oflt
movies and 39 percent of R moiie
were in the high violence cal
defined by the coalition as ban
more than 10 violent acts each bom
One film, “Shogun Assassin,’pm
duced by Tristar, averaged 123vi
lent acts per hour, the coalition sail
It was followed by “Flash Gordon
(Universal) with 82 per hour
“Any Which Way You Can” (War
ner) with 29.
Coalition Chairman Dr. Thomsi
Radecki, associated with the South 1
ern Illinois University School a
Medicine, attributed the growth!
movie violence to the rating systeia,
“The MPAA rating system
made it seem childish to want to got)
a movie without sex or violence, k
said. “Producers are forced to adl
violence or an adult sex scene
avoid the G-rating which woui
cause a box office disaster even fci
movies aimed at children and adota
cents.”
