There eseas ; facte Hesti lal ref owboy vanta; le.Th ght, tl After Shelby Metcalf walked quickly through the Texas A&M Sports Information office Tuesday night after watching his team lose its sixtl game of the year. His head was down in thought and from another room one could hear Claude Riley trying to explain the mystery that is the 1981 Texas AM basketball team. Reporters s; oke quietly to one another, shaking their heads. One piped up, however, perhaps foolishly. “Shelby, it looks like I’ll be flying up to Arkansas this weekend to see you all play.” Metcalf looked up and smiled. “Well,” he drawled, "you can have rriy seat.” That is Shelby Metcalf. Despite having to sit through a coach’s nightmare such as the 54-50 heartbreaker to Rice Tuesday evening, he keeps his wit. At least we have that. But there’s still that mystery. No doubt most of us have among ourselves over the woes of the team. From every source comes some explanation, and from every foe there comes that inevitable statement: “They’ll come around. They’re too good not to.” From Arkansas, Eddie Sutton, who.watched his Razorbacks drop their third SWC game Monday night, spouted that he believed the eventual SWC winner could possibly have four losses. In that sense, there’s still hope, however slim. And, as any fan see, this is not a typical SWC season. Rice, TCU and Baylor are whipping the big boys while A&M, Texas and Arkansas sweat. Doubtless the Aggies, Razorbacks and Longhorns will come around, but it may already be too late. Although the general concensus among us would-be reporter types is the Bears, 5-0, will fold once they hit the road, it’s a good bet Houston, 4-1, won’t. The Cougars are playing amazingly good basketball on and off the road behind sharpshooter Guy Williams and the gang, and now have brought a 6-11 Nigerian fellow named Akeem Abdul Olajuowa (pro nounced oh-lie-jew-oh-uh) into the fold. Nicknamed “Akeem the Dream” in spite of the fact he has never played a lick of college basketball, this 17-year-old prodigy played for the Nigerian national team and has the Cougar campus hopping. But while most SWC fans moon over the amazin’ Bears, many still wonder over the collapse of Texas A&M. Every major news service pegged the Ags as the team to beat, with only Arkansas standing in the way for a second consecutive SWC crown. Taking a look at the rest of the season, nothing is secure, certainly. The Aggies have 11 SWC contests remaining, with five at home. This weekend, they will be in the hills of Arkansas to take on the hungry Razorbacks. If you will remember last year when the maroon and white visited the hills, they had quite a fun evening. Part way through the game with A&M ahead and rolling, half of the lights in Barnhill Arena mysterious ly went out. The officials continued the game. At that point, Arkansas started coming back. Topping it off, a rash of questionable calls brought the Razorbacks ttp within striking distance. Official Reggie Copeland capped the affair by I [ calling a questionable foul on A&M’s David Goff with time expiring. The result: Razorback U.S. Reed (the foul-er or foul-ee) sank two free throws and Arkansas came away with a 45-44 win. That was 1980, though, and this is 1981. What’s wrong with the Aggies? By simple observation, there is a lack of senior leadership and scoring. The Aggies have averaged 68 points a game this season. On the positive side, freshmen Roy Jones and Reggie Roberts gave a masterful show for the more than 7,000 fans in attendance Tuesday night, refusing to crack under pressure. On the negative side, once again seniors Rynn Wright and Vernon Smith never got untracked and managed only 11 points between them. As Wright and Smith go, so go the Aggies. But, as someone once said (I don’t know who), it takes four to tango in the SWC post-season tournament, and four losses will eas/7y qualify a team for at least fourth place in the final tally. We might not win the conference, but the gig ain’t up yet. ecific Hen iladel iar Fr: T jus ying tc lefoot cords; iielc epulle ccessfi Like; ring, F ady of coi BICE (5- Pierce7( Tudor 3 2, DeCe •2054.
