OK, where's the tree?
What looks like a giant Christmas ornament is actually an
environmental design project. The geodesic dome — a dome
constructed of triangular panels — is being hung in a hallway
of the Langford Architecture Center.
CS decides on
home child care
By DEBBIE NELSON
Battalion Staff
The College Station city council Thursday night decided a prece
dent-setting home child care case and passed a new child care ordi-
ance.
If the council maintains the precedent, in-home child care centers
ill be allowed in residential areas, within limited numbers.
After an hour of dispute over propriety of child day care businesses
in residential areas, the council granted an indefinite deadline exten
sion for a conditional use permit to Mary Norman’s child home day care
center at 1103 Francis.
Norman babysits 10 children in her home, and had been told to
phase her operation down to six children by August 31, 1981. She won
ier appeal Thursday night, despite a 163-signature petition protest
from area residents.
Numerous parents of the six-week-to-four-year-old children Mary
Norman babysits spoke for the quality of care she provides. Some are
Residents spoke out against the permit, saying it caused heavy area
traffic, opened the door to more child care centers in the area and could
depreciate area property values.
A new ordinance regulating child care centers was then passed.
Provisions of the ordinance require each center has: 1) a permit issued
by the city, 2) a safety inspection by the fire marshal, 3) a health/
" sanitary inspection by the health department and 4) full-time duty by
an employee who has taken a first-aid course offered by the city.

Miller, Cadets a
stage full of talent
By JANE G. BRUST
Battalion Staff
Mary K. Miller seemed to enjoy
herself in Rudder Auditorium last
night.
And because she did, her audi
ence enjoyed themselves, too.
In a free concert presented by the
MSC Town Hall and Opera and Per
forming Arts Committees, Miller
belted out a variety of tunes like the
seasoned professional she is. Her
voice was strong, her smile was daz
zling.
College Station Bank paid for the
concert that featured the former Las
Vegas entertainer along with Danny
which gave a Las Vegas twist to the
country favorite.
The Singing Cadets delighted the
audience with a variety of their favo
rites including a rock n roll medley
and the lively “Nothin’ Like A
Dame.” Another treat was their
Christmas medley of Irving Berlin
tunes, featuring “White Christmas. ”
The Cadets joined Miller for the
finale, a sensational performance of
“American Trilogy,” highlighted by
the spine-tingling “Battle Hymn of
the Republic.”
With a stage full of talent, the au
dience couldn’t help but be im
pressed.
Review
Ward and his 30-piece orchestra,
and three women singing backup.
The Texas A&M University Singing
Cadets opened the show.
After the orchestra’s overture of
“2001” and “C. C. Rider,” Miller
opened with a bubbly “Drivin’ My
Life Away.” She bounced around the
stage with her contagious smile as if
she already knew she was a hit in
Aggieland.
Miller’s strong point was her ver
satility. Her voice was sexy and sul
try for “Release Me” and “Do It to
Me One More Time.”
Then she was sassy and brassy
with her renditions of “Johnny B.
Good” and “Heartbreak Hotel. ”
Much to the audience’s delight,
Miller even did a little bit of country
with “Help Me Make It Through the
Night” and “Stand By Your Man." A
crowd of mostly community citizens
filled only two-thirds of the au
ditorium.
While Miller took a short break,
Ward and his orchestra performed
their version of “Cotton Eyed Joe, ”
