NEW ALVAREZ
By GLENN KRAMPOTA
Battalion Reporter
People almost always remember to leave milk and cookies out for
Santa Claus. It’s part of the Christmas spirit.
But a couple in College Station has been keeping their “giving
spirit” alive with another meaningful tradition: they collect candy for
children at the Austin State School for the Retarded.
They began, according to Mary Robinette, 17 years ago by collect
ing leftover Halloween candy for the children. Now Mary and her
husband Jim collect donations of money and unopened ciandy.
Both are staff members at Texas A&M University. Mary is a re
search technician for the horticulture department and Jim is a labora
tory mechanic in chemistry.
Their interest in the project stems from the fact that they have a
23-year-old son in the Austin State School. “We don’t stress amounts of
money, or amounts of candy,” Mary said.
The important thing, she said, is to remember those at the school
who cannot go home for Christmas. Some of the children will stay at
the school indefinitely, she said.
“I’d rather get 100 people to donate a dollar than get a few big
donations,” she said, “because that means more people remember (the
children).”
