Matthau judges
roles carefully
United Press International
HOLLYWOOD—Waiter Matthau, who stars in three hit movies
every two years with the regularity of a metronome, is cagily
selective about his roles.
A character actor-leading man, Matthau brings a special magic
to the screen with his St. Bernard face, shambling gait, accusa
tory voice and disjointed limbs. He seems, moreover, to bring out
the best in such costars as Jack Lemmon, Glenda Jackson and
George Bums.
Currently Matthau is starring with Jill Clayburgh in “First Mon
day in October,” playing a thinly diguised Supreme Court Justice
William O. Douglas confronted with the high court’s first woman
justice, Clayburgh.
One day this week at Paramount Studios, Matthau’s lunch hour
was taken up with posing for pictures with seven members of the
William Morris office, among them agency founder Abe Lastfogei
along with his driver.
After that was over, he turned his attention to his newest role
and reckoned it was one of the most serious he’s played.
“This is easily the best part I’ve ever done,” he said. “It's not
only serious, but as all serious roles should be, it is entertaining,
enlightening and funny."
Matthau said his role, patterned after the late Justice Douglas,
appealed to him because he was an admirer of Dougias' politics.
“1 agreed almost 100 percent with his politics,” Matthau said,
“but it didn't help me to play the part at all. 1 find it easier to play
people 1 disagree with socialiy, politically, psychologically and
physiologically.
“I find it easier to play the other side. When people say they’ve
written a part exactly for me, they’re taking a part from a personal
ity they’ve seen me develop over the years on talk shows and the
like.
“The best parts for me and the ones 1 make my own are the
roles originally written for Clint Eastwood or Clark Gable or Robert
Taylor — parts that were not written with my idiocsyncratic, syn
dromic list of characteristics as Waiter Matthau — like gambling
on horses or going to baseball games.
“I almost automatically throw up when somebody says, Tve
written a script with you in mind.’ My question is, ‘How in the hell
do you know who 1 am? 1 don't even know.’”
Matthau also resents producers and moviegoers who fail to
envision him as a leading man. He gets downright choleric.
“When fzzy Diamond adapted 'The Cactus Ftower’ he said, ‘I
never envisioned you in the part.’ And a critic said I was miscast.
Now how in hell can! be miscast as a New York dentist? I LOOK
like a New York dentist, for God’s sake.
“They said 1 was miscast because I had love scenes with Ingrid
Bergman and they weren’t used to a fellow like me having love
scenes with Ingrid Bergman and Goldie Hawn, and so they’re
prejtfoiced,
script and saying, ‘There’s nothing in it for you.’ I say, ’Do you
mind if I read it?’ Then 1 see some part that appeals to me.
“Biliy Wilder tefls me foe only parts 1 should play are lovable
rogues and I totally disagree with him. If that were the case, i
wouldn't work more than every six or seven years.”
