■ Country singer pats Aggies By JANE G. BRUST Battalion Staff “l don’t know what they do at Texas A&M, but those kids are proud of their school,” he said. When Dickie Westmoreland wrote the song, “ATribute to the Maroon and White,” he wanted to characterize the Aggies as proud, he said. Westmoreland, 39, is part of a country and western band, The Madison Express, which consists of "three Bryan boys and two Madisonville boys including myself,” he said. He said his group has played a lot of parties for Texas A&M University students. “The first time we ever played the ‘War Hymn' at a party, you never heard such a reaction to it—we couldn’t hear ourselves til we were way down into the song,” he said. Last April at Cell Block Five in Bryan, some students told Westmoreland they would like a song about the Aggies so he asked them for some ideas. “We put legal pad on the stage and got ’em to list the things they’re proud of,” he said. “Everything on that pad is in the song.” The most popular responses were Coach Tom Wil son’s football team, the team’s winning record of the last several games against the University of Texas and “a dog called Reveille.” The song dedicated to “the sons and daughters of the maroon and white” also mentions Wednesday night at the Hall of Fame, “doin’ the Cotton Eyed Joe,” Friday night at the Cell Block, “dancin’ close and slow,” and Saturday night at Lakeview, “doin’ the do-si-do.” Westmoreland said he took two weeks to write the song, and did some research on his own. For example, he learned that Texas A&M provided more officers to World War II than any other military school. OL oGta** on toacK ^ He said that fact explains the lytic, “When it comes to \ love of school or country, they’re the first to answer the \ call.” After Westmoreland recorded his song, he decided to do something else for the Aggies. He contacted Robert Boone, vocal music coordinator for Texas A&M. Then he gave the Singing Cadets the rights to sale and distribution of the record, he said. Hank Rorabeck, chairman of the record sales, said the Singing Cadets have sold 1600 records since September. Each 45 sells for $2. Rorabeck said the Singing Cadets would like to use the profits to finance a trip to Europe for international competi tion that summer. Westmoreland said he has written other songs for his group and is working on a country and western version of “I’d Rather Be a Texas Aggie,” which the Singing Cadets have recorded. He said that after he records that song, he may give those rights to the Singing Cadets as well. With all the attention Westmoreland has given to Texas A&M, one might find it hard to believe that he never attended the University himself. He received a master’s degree in technical agriculture from Sam Houston State University and is employed by the Commission of Agricul ture for the State of Texas. The Madison Express, together four years, plays main ly within Texas but has gone out of the state a few times. “You can’t get anywhere that there’s not A&M gradu ates,” Westmoreland said. “We were so far back in the piney woods toward Louisiana over a month ago, and we took requests and someone said, ‘Hey that’s the group that does the tribute to the Aggies.’ Sure enough there were three or four Aggies there,” he said. “We love to play for Texas Aggie parties,” he said. “They’re the best damn people anywhere.” MORNING 9:30 0 2 COUNTRY KIDSWORLD AFTERNOON 12:30 0 VOYAGE TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD Jacques Cous teau and his crew explore the underwater secrets of the fro zen continent of Antarctica in his most dangerous expedition ever. 2:00 0 THE SHATTERER OF WORLDS From the establish ment of the Los Alamos labora tory to the explosion at Hiroshi ma, humanists review the development of the atomic bomb with historical film foot age from the United States and abroad. 2:30 © PIAF, BREL AND LEBRUN French chanteuse Denise LeBrun sings the music of her countrymen Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf.
